Soupy Sales Gone

Nice guy. I never dug his humor, but his passing is sad.

The weird thing is just last week I was asking my wife "Whatever happened to Soupy Sales?"

I was surprised to hear this on the radio this morning. I guess he was always 30-something and "zany" in my mind.

I watched his show in NY when I was a kid, and saw a few shows of Whats My Line? (usually when I was home sick from school).

I read the Wikipedia article on him and was reminded of the urban legend I heard in grade school -- that he told secret, "dirty" jokes during the show.

Don Imus hated him -- I wonder why?

Because Soupy was funny, and Imus is just a dried up windbag?

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Well, Imus had a good thing going with Bernard McGirk (sp?) on sydicated radio a while ago. Bernard would toss out witty daggers that made me bust out laughing during the morning commute.

I would listen to Howard some, but after 30 minutes of seventh-grade cafeteria humor, I found Imus a bit more compelling.

NPR was part of the commute, but the plight of siberian mollusks would put me to sleep -- not good while driving.

When he was "Imus in the morning" on WABC, all he had was "Quack, quack" and a severe case of the mumbles.

IMDB said:
A prank was played on him (Soupy) by the studio crew during a live broadcast of one of his shows. Upon opening a prop door on his set, a nude dancer was gyrating in front of him as a recording of "The Stripper" was playing over the studio loudspeakers. While the woman was out of camera shot for the television feed, the studio monitors were rigged so Sales could see the nude dancer on them, giving the impression that she was being broadcast live on his children's show. Convinced that his career was over, yet still laughing with his crew, he asked that they cut to a commercial. Only then was he told that the nude dancer wasn't shown on the live feed. He later joked, "All I really wanted from her was her autograph." The clip from the show has circulated in several videotape collections of "bloopers" and out-takes.
Can you imagine if that were to happen on a kids show these days? OHMYGAWD! There would be people put in jail over stuff like that.

HEard that at 1 AM this morning while driving home from IAD (one-day commercial trip out west - sigh).

You never dug his humor? Dude this stuff is so up your alley

On New Year's Day, 1965, Soupy asked his young audience to go to Daddy's wallet and get those, "little green pieces of paper with pictures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Lincoln, and Jefferson on them, send them to me, and I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico."

The outcry from parents led to a suspension (most people believe he was fired outright). Soupy jokes that he inspired televangelists that now use the same basic technique. The publicity helped tremendously, it gave Soupy's image a slightly dangerous edge - for a '60's kid show host anyway. The Soupy Sales Show quickly became the program of choice for the cool kids.

I watched Soupy everyday as I grew up near Detroit.
His slap stick humor taught me and hopefully many others to laugh at silly things and laugh at ourselves. I think we can all agree most of the kids shows ,cartoon's, etc. were made by adults for kids--- of all ages 1-100.
The world has become so serious.
What could be more fun than getting a pie in the face from whitefang or blacktooth-ruht roh:rolleyes:
Laurel and Hardy,Three Stooges, Marx Brothers, Soupy Sales all lotsa silly stupid fun, just what we all needed and maybe could use a little more of today.
RIP Soupy:yesnod:

Soupy definitely made me laugh a few times... and he was an innovator, especially in how to do broadcasts for kids.

White Fang and Black Tooth ...LOL remember their paws from offscreen and their noises: that growly kinda whooohaaa whaaohhwahh LOL Rememer his lunches...OMG the worst crap in the world, but back them we kids could actually eat peanut butter without breaking out in an anaphalactic (sp) event. He was great!

Also, this just reminded me about Sandy Becker...same time frame as Soupy, he was a NY TV legend...was it Wonderama? Who remembers Geeba Geeba?

i REMEMBER HIM WELLL.. BUT i DID NOT LIKE HIS HUMOR EITHER AS A KID..OR HIS pie THROWINGS....Bob Hope will always be the best comic EVER with safe humor and kindness to all... and the USO shows I will never forget and the football picks....RT

I grew up watching him on tv here in the NY area too. But my favorite was the radio show he had on WNBC-AM in NYC in the 1980s. He was on midday after Imus. His show was funny and entertaining. But I think Soupy always had a problem with authority. One day I got the feeling that something was going on in the studio, probably an argument with management. Anyway, at one point in the show they went to commercial and when they came back, no Soupy, just music for the rest of the program. LOL!!!
Wouldn't expect less from Soupy. From what I've read he loved his fans and never refused anyone an autograph or photo.

Well ,I wouldn't put him in the same category as Bob Hope,Jack Benny, Red Skelton, George Burns, Johnny Carson, etc
But for most kids of all age's he was funny, but there again not everyone laugh's at someone who fart's in church. That makes me chuckle still if their not sitting too close:rolleyes: Pie 's in the face are still so stupid it's funny, especially with the gun shot:rofl::rofl:
