I swear I heard somewhere about an airport in the southern half of CA that is fairly remote and right on the beach, but I cant seem to remember where.

My CFI has the same memory and suggested we get together all his students who recently passed their checkrides and do a fly in/bonfire/campout, but we cant remember where the airport is.

Anyone?

Oceano, L52... not 'right' on the beach, but does have camping. Only issue is sometimes the marine layer.

Only one I can think of would be Oceano, near Pismo Beach. Short runway. Very close (walking distance) to Pismo beach.

Santa Barbara is as best I can think of in SoCal. Avalon too, but there's an interesting climb to the beach. San Nicolas island has a pretty close strip as does NAS North Island, but you'll never make it.... A couple other Channel Islands have strips within walking distance, but they are private ranch strips.

There's Pebbly Beach on Catalina which is a waterport.

I'll take a look at Oceano, that may be what we were both thinking of. I've been to Avalon and Santa Barbara a few times. Catalina Airport is a favorite of mine, but definitely not close enough to the beach. When my CFI brought it up Santa Barbara was my first thought, but it's not exactly right on the beach either (though very close) and it didn't look like they allowed camping there.

You can walk around to the beach from Santa Barbara but the gate is on the inland side.

Read some up to date description of the campground. It seems they no longer have showers, for instance.

Though the state campground is pretty close by.

If you need showers to camp you're doing it wrong. When I think of camping I think of a place to pitch a tent and light a fire. If there's an enclosed place to drop the kids off at the pool that's a bonus.

They also note on the website I linked

*Must Fly-In to use campground facilities*
Campground is directly adjacent to tarmac.
Multiple Fire-pits
Restrooms available at Terminal
Showers - Not Available
Laundry - Not available

These days I prefer my camping at the Pacific Plaza Resort. :D

There's nothing wrong with that, but I wouldn't call it camping
