42 minutes... click on it and watch it full screen, 1080P HD video if you have the bandwidth! It's annotated as to what they're doing. Fun stuff.

Bruno's intro:

Bruno said:
The full 42 minute version of 3 gliders racing each other over Wyoming's amazing Salt River mountain range during the 2011 15-meter national gliding contest. The glider taking the video is an ASW-20B piloted by Bruno Vassel IV. The glider shown at the start of this video is John Cochrane ("BB") flying an ASW-27B and the second glider in the middle of the video is Tim Taylor ("TT") flying a Ventus 2a. All gliders were fully ballasted. My 20B was 1157 pounds and had a wing loading of 10.3 pounds.

i haven't watched that particular one but Bruno is a friend and makes good videos. The other two guys in that video, John (BB) and Tim (TT) are top notch pilots. John was on the US Team last year and Tim won the 15 meter nationals this year.

And yea a lot of guys are running old iPaq's and similar PDA's, mostly because a lot of popular soaring software runs on them. I didn't feel like trying to keep 20 year old electronics going so i bought the new Oudie which is basically just a Chinese PNA with SeeYou Mobile loaded on it. But it works right out of the box!

not familiar with gliders, what is that control he is using w his left hand?

great video

he was tweaking flap position with the left hand throughout to flight to try to optimize climb and glide. airbrakes are also typically on the left but i'm sure he wasn't using them during this run.

LOL I'm glad someone asked, 'cause my glider time had the spoilers over there too.

I was wondering about that. ;) And I was being lazy and not looking up his specific glider's specs.

Super cool. I have a glider gift certificate that I bought (long story) before I ever took lessons. It does NOT expire but is located all the way in Nevada. One day I will use it for their "acro" glider with a CFI - ! Can't wait.
