Not 100% sure, but I think all they do is replace the chute with a new one. I believe they all have expiration dates and have to be replaced or repacked at some interval anyway. Maybe the Captain saw the date on the pack and thought here's my chance!

They replace the slide pack and the deployed one gets sent back for inspection and repacking.

As I understand it there are two levers that operate the slide; lever A & B.

If you don't know what lever A is for then lever B ...
