what is required by the faa from someone that wants to get a sleep study and if needed a cpap machine and is halfway through the next third class certification period? Do they wait until the next AME meeting to bring all the required paper work or do they have to self ground and report to the fAA?

Talk to Dr Bruce for verification, but once you know you have a disqualifying condition you need to self ground and start the treatment. After 30 days on the CPAP you get a new physical and your AME sends the CPAP report in to the FAA. They have up to 30 work days to review, but it is usually quicker than that. The next year you only have to show the report to your AME and he can issue.

Just do it. It not a huge deal.

In case you're unfamiliar, "Dr. Bruce" is Dr. Bruce Chien, MD, AME. You can find him on the AOPA Forums or via his web site. And yes, if you receive a diagnosis of sleep apnea, you are required by 14 CFR 61.53 to immediately ground yourself from any flight activities requiring a medical certificate until you comply with the FAA's protocol for special issuance with sleep apnea -- which Bruce has accomplished with quite a few pilots.
