In this skyvector nav log, does anyone know why the variation is shown as +5 for the first 11 mile leg? Should be +8 all the way, no? Strange.

Hmm, its between two iso lines 9w and 8w. AFD says:

Magnetic Variation from 1980 is 5° West

Why do we care what it was in 1980, wow. Airport KMAO 25 miles East has: Magnetic Variation from 2015 is 8° West

This is (one of the reasons) I no longer use Skyvector.

I use it all the time. What's wrong with it?

Agreed, I don't do a full flight plan on SkyVector but I absolutely use it when planning a route. When I'm ready to create my real flight plan I use fltplan.com

" When present, we always use the values published in the NFD. The NFD is a data file published by the FAA in ARINC-424 format for use in navigation systems, GPS's, etc. It is published every 28 days and SkyVector regards it as the canonical source for all navigation data. I'll refer you to this thread for more reading on this topic skyvector.com/content/magnetic-course-numbers-few-degrees#comment-569 "
