Anyone know if the Continental O-470U could be installed in a C-182P? The Skylane came originally with an O-470S in it... and I know the C-182Q used that engine...
Thanks for the intel in advance.

Paging @texasag93 (known in other parts as Brian with an "i") .... Our club dealt with this same question replacing the engine in our Skylane. Brian did lots of research about what was available. Perhaps he can share what he learned.

One item I can share is that we originally had the "light weight" case in our 1975 182P. Our Skylane went into a planned annual inspection late February. Within 48 hours of the A&P getting his hands on it, he called us with the bad news about the crack.

Brian's research found that Continental has a "heavyweight" option available. We chose that one.

yikes. Great information. I'd appreciate help with this and I thank you for your response.

John Jewell Aircraft have an STC for this. You may need a C204 prop as well.

It would require an STC because it wasn't certified with it.

Which would lead to this... ^^^. :)

Are you going for added reliability of the O-470U? Because unless it is built right, it's often not more reliable.

If you're going for the higher 2000 hour TBO, you may be better off looking into having it rebuilt under the P.Ponk STC if your case and components allow. You have to contact them to see on your specific engine, though.

What's the actual goal?

Pponking an R or S engine requires a different crank.

Call Air Plains and go with an IO-550 or IO-520. It’s only money and in this case its not my money so it sounds like a good plan! :)

If it’s only money then IO-550 for sure. :)

For the U:

You need a C204 prop, $5-7000
You need a different crank: $4500
You need a heavy case: $4000

Texas Skyways suggests a factory reman engine $33k (has correct case and crank) and then add the prop, so $40k plus installation and shipping. $45,000-$46,000.

You have the original case (known as a light case), so your TBO is 1500 hours. Our's made it to 1550. A crack was found in the case and that is what sent us through this process. Going with a heavy case will get you to the 1700 TBO, but with a heavy case our engine would have lasted longer.

We went with a factory reman.

I am attaching the sheet that I made to let the club make the decision.
