Skydive run in a Beech 18 Westwind

Thanks

Really neat. Turbine equipment must have revolutionized skydiving. The DZ that I frequented had a Beaver for its big loads, and two Cessna 180s for the small ones. They'd get all of them going at once for big flights, and it would take 40+ minutes for that Beaver to get to altitude.

Cool stuff!

Really cool. Looks like a fun way to build some time.

40 minutes, wow!! I do round trip to 11,500 in under 15 minutes with 16 people

Yeah, I'm not sure why it took that long, other than they may have been trying to get as much altitude as possible for a big RW jump, as it would involve all three airplanes. As a novice jumper, the most dreaded words on the field were "Beaver load", because it swallowed up all the jumpmasters for an hour.

This was at a different Greene County, Greene County Sport Parachute Center in Bardstown, KY, which closed in 2007. I think the lack of turbine equipment did them in.

I haven't jumped in almost 40 years, but now my eldest has asked for a tandem for her 18th birthday next year, and I told her I'd go with her, so I can be a meat bomb for at least one more day.

Very cool.

What's the reason for stopping at 11,500? The outfits around here go to 15,000 or 18,000 if you pay a bit more.

That's the altitude we drop tandems at, sport jumpers we'll take higher!

That plane with those turbines is sweet.

I was gonna ask you while watching the video if you beat the divers down. Looks like you do.

You aren't building time in that thing quickly. You need to slow down on the way down. lol.

Cool, but, uh, why? My tandem was from 15,000. I'm genuinely curious what defines the jump height. 15,000 and 18,000 make sense to me (regulations: O2 and Class A, respectively). But if the jump is from lower, what's driving that decision?

We're about 1,000 msl here, it saves wear and tear on the equipment, and the tandems don't really know any better, the other local outfit does 8k

8K! With a 1K surface? So only 7K fall? Let's say open is 4K AGL for a tandem, which means only a 3K freefall.1.5K acceleration and just 1.5K at terminal. 11.5K is a much better deal than that, certainly. 6K at terminal very much beats 1.5K!

My singular jump was onto a beach in Santa Cruz out of Marina Airport (KOAR). I guess that outfit had the advantage that they were using a King Air as a jump platform.
