This is a video of my trip, this last summer, into the Flying "B" Ranch, on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho. I made this video as close to the 10 minute limit, to show you the rugged back country in this part of Idaho.
I had to make a last minute change in my landing pattern because of an aircraft ahead of me wanting to circle the "B". You will notice I had to use full flaps and then slip a little to get down. I planned on landing back to the South, but changed and landed to the North. Then there was a big Dornier aircraft parked with his nose sticking out in the runway and I had to make a S turn on short final. I had never landed here before this trip, in fact, I had never been into this part of the Salmon.
My two passengers were Benny and Keith a couple of old farmers. Keith flew P-47s in WWII. and Benny Buys my Mural Society ride at auction each year he can, Because he loves to go flying with me. In Sept. Benny was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. Doc gave him Six Months-----. I showed them some new country. Live is good! Bob---- Enjoy.

kgruber, Nice still picture of the parking at the "B". This picture is looking to the North. On take off this direction you stay on the River around what is called the Z turn. A straight out departure will take you awful close to the top of that ridge top. Bob

That's my blue and white Cessna in the picture. I landed the same direction as you, to the north, but must have been lower around that last hill becaquse I don't remember having to slip. I do remember my sister kissing the ground though!

It's a great place, especially for horses!

Nice looking airplane, Oh I see N185KG. a 185. No wonder you had no trouble in and out of the "B". My 182B is all standard, no STOL or anything I have trouble getting it slowed down. Bob

I have trouble getting it slowed down. Bob

Oh, I think you do all right!

I don't believe in any STOL mods at all. In fact, I prefer the pre 1973 wing to the "Camber cuff" leading edge.

As far as getting in and out, all I claim is making a whole lot more NOISE than you!

Cool video of a unique place Bob. Did you ever get into Bernard airstrip trailhead just about a mile upriver? Talk about peaceful -except for the rattlesnakes and bears.

Just curious why you don't believe in any STOL mods at all?

Dave, No I haven't been anywhere to check out the area. I was only into the "B" this one time and we had to eat and depart before it got to warm. I would sure like to spend some time and check all of those places out. Bob

THe "b" has a nice location there on the river. Pretty crazy up to the north with all of those crags sticking out. You really have to be sharp on base/final.

Man is it pretty out there!!!!

Today, I gave an extended "discovery flight" to a lady and a visiting friend. Both do not fly but both have siblings who are pilots. He's from Idaho. While waiting for fuel, I asked him if he had any clue what he was missing out on by not being a pilot in Idaho.

I was shocked, really. He had no interest in taking control of the airplane while he was in the left seat. I stopped at Lago Vista and shut down for them to swap places. She never let go of the yoke until short final back at Austin when I called "My airplane."

Kenny, There are a lot of people that do not realize that the most beautiful part of Idaho can only be seen in a small aircraft. The Idaho back country is a wonder. I don't pretend to know even a small portion of it. It sounds like she is a candidate for a pilot license. I just love to take a person for a ride and have them want to take a shot at flying. Bob

Just saw the video today, Bob... great footage! What time of day was it? Morning, I presume (you mentioned breakfast)... the lighting in the hills was tough--lots of shadows. What made you say "oops" twice on the landing?? Was the runway slick from the irrigation water??

Troy, It was just one of those landings where things just don't go as you planned. I was going to land the opposite direction, but a pilot practicing a landing and circling for a look see made me change my mind. Then that big old German made Dornier aircraft was sticking out in the runway that was all wet. Plus the fact that this was my first time ever into this place had me a little out of sorts. I didn't think I did a very good job of touching down is why I made a couple oops comments. It was about 9:00 local time when we landed. It is important to be out by 10:00 when it is warm. This strip isn't as high as most in the Idaho back country. I didn't have any problems with the water on the runway it wasn't slick. Bob
