Single-engine plane down at KASD - Slidell

Grew up near there and still have a lot of friends in the area. Hoping it's not one of them.
 
My parents text me that it was a Bonanza, not sure their source.
 
Apparently about 700 yards west of the end of 36. Not anyplace but trees to put it down out there.

Sounds like maybe the engine quit and he was trying to turn it back to the runway

Way better than it was back in the day when I flew out of KASD, but still not a lot of options once you get past the airport boundary. The trees used to be a lot closer to the runway if I remember right. Made crosswind landings rough.

That was the plane wonder if this happened on a later departure than the Flightaware track linked which was never picked up or if it was this flight and Flightaware times are off.

Damn. Yeah, must have been the departure later in the day.

Yup. The south end is ok if you're still low, nice open field. North end is pretty much nothing but pine trees.

Authorities now believe the small single-engine plane that crashed at Slidell Airport Wednesday, killing one, went down earlier in the afternoon, possible as early as 2 p.m.

Another pilot who took off at the municipal airport at about 6 p.m. spotted smoke and some debris and called 911, prompting a response from Slidell Police, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office and St. Tammany Fire Protection District No. 1, Slidell Police Chief Randy Fandal said Thursday.

Fandal said that the earlier time frame was determined by the degree of fire damage. He said the plane appeared to have gone straight down.
The plane crashed in a dark and heavily wooded area off the airport's northwest runway.

Had a friend go down in a stall/spin accident in an LSA. The airplane crashed beside the runway. The flight school's 172's did touch and go practice for about 20 minutes, passing the wreckage every time, until my friend was able to extract himself from the wreckage and call the FBO.

Some people don't see anything beyond what they are looking for.

That would coincide with the Flightaware track.

He had obviously been doing approach practice into BXA and ASD
