Sidnaw Saturday, 3July ??

Mom and Dad will be up there. I'm undecided as to whether I am going or not.

It is supposed to be great WX this weekend. Anyone up for meeting at 6Y9 for lunch on Saturday?

Sounds like fun but I have to pass. That's 8 hours on the Hobbs(round trip) and I need to get the yard mowed and Hay in the barn.

I couldn't get a plane for Friday (I was going to do Central County for lunch). I'll head over to the airport and see if I can get something for Saturday. Really can't afford it, though. :( Works out to be about a $750 hamburger! ($328 each if Leslie comes too.)

Let me know if you can make. I am thinking it looks good right now and it will be nice to visit there on a non-flyin weekend. That is something I have been wanting to do for a couple of years.

Just grabbed a plane for the weekend. Now I need to get Leslie's OK. :) (She may have studying to do.)

I booked the plane from 10AM Saturday. Figure I can be up there by 1PM central (2PM local time). Is that too late?

Cool. I called Bill's and verified that they will be open. They're open until 5PM Eastern.

Leslie's in! We'll launch as close to 10 as we can. I hope Diz and Brad can join us for a late lunch! I don't have their phone numbers. Ed, can you let them know we're coming? You can give them my number.

We had a great time in Sidnaw. We were going to go to dijner at Sheboygan, but they were closed. We decided to do dinner at watertown.

Jealous as hell, Grant and Leslie! How about some photos?? SOME of us MAY want to fly in there in the near (61 days) future and would appreciate the advance tutorial! :)

I took a couple. I'll post them tomorrow.

It was a great day and we had a fun adventure on the way home. Brad and Diz of course made themselves the perfect host. I ran into a person there that I had crossed paths with decades ago and we knew lots of the same people from that era. He had even started a business with my old boss, who I found had just passed away in a car accident a few years ago.

Actually, I didn't take a single photo! I think that Diz may have taken some, but I'm not sure. As Scott said, it was great seeing Brad and Diz:goofy: again, and meeting their daughter Meridith. They met us at the airport, despite already having house guests (including the person Scott is referring to). While we were there, four planes occupied the "ramp" at Sidnaw.

Bill's is pretty good! They're open 7 - 5 EDT. Remember the time zone change if you're heading there from IL or WI, even though it's due north of Chicago. They have a small grill, and do typical breakfast and lunch fare, ranging from omelets and pancakes to burgers, Reubens, and mozzarella sticks. I wish I'd have thought to get a menu to go. :( It's in the old Mom's Kitchen building (which still says Mom's Kitchen on it). Walk out the main airport entrance, cross the highway, and look right. You can't miss it.

After lunch, we went over to the gas station to get some of their hand dipped ice cream cones. The proprietor, (I think one of Diz's relations?) recognized us and commented that we were early!

We left there to get fuel. Brad clued us in to good self-service prices:thumbsup: at Land of Lakes (KLNL), so both Scott and we headed over there. Of course, there's no cell phone coverage up there, so we launched without a briefing, and didn't talk to Center for the short, low flight over. As we call inbound, someone at the airport gets on the radio and notifies us that it is closed. Apparently it's NOTAMed closed for an Independence Day celebration:hairraise:, and it hadn't popped up on the DUATS briefing I got for the flight up to 6Y9 (I just verified, even though it was the course of the closest weather):dunno:! Why they didn't put the announcement on the AWOS, I have no idea. So we diverted south a bit to Eagle River (KEGV), where we were fueled by the truck while we waited in air conditioned comfort.

We decided then to go to dinner together at the wonderful restaurant at Sheboygan (KSBM). We checked the NOTAMs (because we could!) and saw that the crosswind runway was closed, but that wasn't a problem. We flew there together at 7,500' to avoid the rough ride we had down low going to LNL/EGV, and had a great flight. Leslie and I landed, rolled 4000' down the 6000' runway before we could turn off since the parallel taxiway was under construction, and taxied to the Burroughs ramp, where the restaurant is located. It seemed awfully quiet, though. Then Scott calls in on final and the Unicom operator at the other FBO gets on and tells him that the restaurant is closed today! By this point, we were in a position to confirm this, so we talked to Scott on 122.75 and set Watertown (KRYV) as the alternate food destination.

He hasn't landed at SBM yet, so diverts directly to RYV. We have to taxi back to the runway, wait for a departure and an inbound, then back taxi on the runway for a departure. I high-tail it to Watertown, figuring that Scott was already almost there. We're lining up with the extended centerline 12 miles out when we hear Scott call in at 17 miles out. We passed him and never saw him. The winds were out of the south at 8 gusting 15 or so. Another plane called in 5 south inbound when we were on about a 5 mile final for 23. We landed, making regular radio calls (one at 2 miles, another at short final) and didn't hear the other plane again. As I'm rolling out on the runway, what do I see but another plane rolling toward me on the side of the runway, making no radio calls! I did not see him on approach, and neither did Leslie. I was plenty slow by the time I saw him that I was able to go to the left (he was taxiing on his left toward me) and pass him without incident, but I did call Scott to let him know of the "back taxi" on the runway, and again when the other plane turned off. It was an attention getter! We taxied up to the FBO and watched the other plane pull up to the pumps, pause, and then taxi around the pumps, returning to his starting point, where he shut down. No harm, no foul, but it could have been a nasty runway incursion.

Anyway, we enjoyed nice salads and beverages at Steakfire, and then left just about sunset. As we were lifting off, a formation of four F-16s (is that right, Scott?) flew overhead at maybe 4000'. That, followed by a nice calm flight home at 3000', watching all the fireworks, made for a wonderful end to a (mostly) very enjoyable day.

Small world, Grant! I'm planning on going up to KSBM next week with a friend to meet some more friends and we are going to shop the heck out of Elkhart Lake/Plymouth and also a side trip up to the Door County of Wisconsin. :) She has rented a cabin in Ephraim and we are making a long weekend of it! Supposedly there is also the Kohler factory near the airport and one of my friends wants to see what that is all about. What the heck... it's gotta be better than going to work! I'll have some photos when I get back... we're a bunch of scrapbookers. I know there will be about 10 cameras between us!

Yes the town of Kohler is near KSBM and there is a factory/showroom there as well as the Kohler Spa. Me and my SO visited the spa last summer as a late birthday present for me and it was wonderful. We had a magnificent suite with the best bathroom I have ever seen. I huge tub with jacuzzi jets, a shower with about 14 nozzles on it including a rain head and a water fall with colors. I was in eh bathroom for two hours at one point playing and enjoying all of the cool stuff. The spa itself has great, we did massages, enjoyed the different water pool, etc.

The little town of Kohler was built for the the workers long ago and is not a wonder resort area. Do visit, stay if you can.

PICTURES!

Most of these are of Grant and Leslie's arrival.

It was a nice day to fly in, the winds were a little gusty but by the time we left they were even more gusty. The DAs were getting a little high. When I left it was an interesting departure. Usually I leave in the mornings when it is cooler and am up with no problem. But this time the combination of direct crosswind and higher DA delayed my lift off until about mid field, my climb out coming much later. Once clear the tree tops I got smacked with the crosswind and had to adjust. We were climbing at about 200fpm, after about 600 feet I pulled up the flaps and started the climb out at 79knots getting about 400fpm.

As would be the SOP of day Grant and Leslie would pass me at some point during the flight.

As Grant mentioned we found out the Land of Lakes was closed, diverted, got to SBM, restaurant was closed, diverted, got to Watertown, ate, enjoyed some wonderful WX and friends, took off, had a gaggle of F16's go over head. At that point, given our diversion experiences I tuned into guard to hear if we just violated some TFR, LOL, climbed out and had a great view of Grant and Leslie passing us again.

It was truly a great day. I ended up with 5.7 hours of flight time.
