Anyone know value of old shot guns,,,,,say 1862 Remington hammer lift side by side 10 gauge.

I'm no expert, but I thought Reminton's first shotgun was the 1889. For something that old, I'd think you would want to get an expert appraisal.

It's been too many years and I'm sure things have changed, but I have a book at home that gives values for antiques like that. The book is about 25 years old, so I'd check on-line first. Flayderman, Norm "Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values" I have no idea if this book has been updated since.

This is a Witworth patent that was built on contract for wells Fargo. This shot gun was pilfered from the factory by Barb's great grand father, one piece at a time. he was a gun fitter who assembled shot guns the whole family worked for Remington in those days.

MOST, Old side by side shotguns aren't worth a whole lot, price is based on how bad someone wants one.

Parker Brothers shotguns seem to be the exception to this rule. Some of them are insanely priced.
I have a 1916 20Ga. with internal hammers, the cheapest of the line at the time of manufacture and it's (supposedly) worth a few thousand dollars. It sold new for $16.:yikes:

Jeez Tom, that shotgun is almost as old as you!

:D

More likely a Remington 1882.
If it is, in fact, from 1862, it will be a percussion muzzleloader. If it breaks open to take a shotshell it is almost certainly an 1882 model, or one of it's immediate predecessors, the Whitmore Hammer Lifter.

Not true, it is a black powder, brass cartridge, loaded weapon in 10G

IAW the Remington Museum curator in Ilion N.Y. this serial number was made for Wells Fargo in 1862 as 1 of 1000, they stopped production in 1882, as your reference pointed out. This is a vertical hammer lift action. not the sideways action of 1882 and later design.

Tom,
Call Randy or Larry Donley at Donley's Antique Village. He buys and sells old guns and would be able to tell you what a fair price is for it.
Tell him Mark Bell said hi if you do call him. I worked at his place for several seasons.

I had the 10 gauge appraised today, finding it has a top dollar figure of $4600 and this gun is considered to be 80-90% prefect estimated to be worth 44-$4500.

fun,,,,,,, to find out it wasn't junk.

so it's back in the safe and we will hold it a while longer.
