Anyone know where there is a zoo where I can fly in an grab a short cab ride? Looking to go tomorrow. Weather is gonna be great and the boy wants to go to the zoo. Our Little Rock zoo is played out....

How far you want to go? Omaha and St. Louis both have good zoos not too far from airports.

Memphis would work. You could fly into DeWitt Spain.

St Louis Zoo is outstanding, and landing at STL will get you very close with public trans train. St Louis Zoo ranks in my top 3 in the world, and is in serious competition for first, especially since it's free.

Hmm.... Both are tempting.. Off to foreflight to check them out!! Thanks!!

Don't know if it is in your range, but the San Antonio Zoo would be about 10 min from SAT.

Memphis zoo land at dewitt spain. I was planning on going there in the morning but winds are forecast to be 25mph. 65 degrees and 25mph wind would not be a comfortable day at the zoo(for me anyway). So.....we are headed to Birmingham zoo instead in the morning. Landing at BHM and a quick ride to the zoo.

St Louis hands down for zoo, no competition from Memphis.

Unless you want to see a Giant Panda, in which case Memphis wins. Giant Pandas are only at 4 US zoos: Memphis, Atlanta, San Diego, and Washington, DC (National Zoo).

Pandas are over rated!

Springfield is a short hop for you and they have a pretty good zoo for a smaller town. Renowned elephant breeding program.

Not 10 minutes from the airport.

And are sleeping most of the time where you can't see them.

NEVER GO FOR THE PANDAS....you will be disappointed.

Go for other stuff....if Pandas are active...it's just a bonus.

IMO from a yearly SD Zoo member.

San diaaaago

St Louis has better exhibits than San Diego, I was disappointed by the SD zoo when I lived there, especially for the price they charge. The St Louis zoo has been kept free because every time the zoo needed money and was considering charging, the people in St Louis said "Nah, we'll just give you the money you need." and enough donations come in that it stays free.

How long ago was that? SD Zoo had done a lot a few years ago and was a very nice zoo when we were last there 2.5 years ago. But yes, they do charge a lot. We have small kids and did a yearly family membership, so it wasn't too bad.

It's been more than a few years. I hope they did something for the gorilla, his habitat was pathetic for a primate.

SD has to pay for the Pandas somehow....

Ended up at Memphis....place was super busy. Lots and lots of kids everywhere.

The winds below 3000 were rough. Landing was not so elegant, but we got it down.

Zoo is OK, but if you go pack a lunch. Not only is the Service painfully slow, it's typical theme park pricing. $7.10 for a hot dog and bottle of water that took 14 minutes from order to delivery.

Cab ride is $17 from DeWitt field.

If you haven't been to Memphis in a few years, you might be surprised. The zoo has built a lot of new "habitats" for the animals that are really nice. It isn't free, but is worth the trip if you like zoos.

I hope Unit 74 enjoyed his day here. The food is expensive, but that is nothing new for places that have you captive. We are local, so we rarely buy anything to eat there.

As Ronnie Reagan would say "there you go again."

As Tim Winters would say "there you go...talkin' out your ass again."

The St. Louis Zoo is "free" because there's a tax levied on all residents of St. Louis county and also (I believe) the immediate surrounding counties.

This tax supports not only the zoo but the science center, the art museum, the Missouri history museum, and the botanical gardens.

And even with the tax, the zoo isn't free. Sure you can get through the front gate for free but there is a charge to see many of the exhibits.

Bottom line...there's no such thing as a free zoo...even in Henningsville.

I'm a big fan of the St. Louis zoo and when I'm in the area I can get there early, park free on the street (fills up quickly), enter free, and see the animals, which is what I come, for without paying a cent. As they say, 'extras are extra' but there's a lot to see at no charge.

Nauga,
who saves his money for the City Museum ;)

Yeah, last time I went was with my sister and her 3 kids. We easily spent $25/head ($125 total) on attractions...not counting food and drink.

It is indeed a really nice zoo though.

But saying it's "free" is pretty laughable.

What was the vote on the tax? I never implied it cost nothing, I said that it was free admission. I remember it coming up several times, and it was always a popular choice to give them the money to keep the admission free. What is the the percentage of the zoo's operating income from this tax vs. private donations?

What difference does it make? Once you pay for fuel, landing fee and ramp fee, an ground transportation, admission to an attraction in an otherwise free zoo doesn't amount to much.

 Was that a question or a statement?

There's free parking within steps of the entrances. There is not unlimited free parking.

Nauga,
and that Rolling Stones song

It won't help the OP, but Oakland, CA has a pretty nice zoo just a short ride from the airport.

Also to note, I had a 40kt headwind on the way home. That sucked bawls....

I was howling yesterday for sure. I was outside working and heard numerous trees fall on our property and saw one go down, a big dead sycamore next to our creek.

Then I came inside and made up a batch of crawfish/shrimp étouffée. Oh, man, how I loves me dat étouffée!
