Majel Barrett Roddenberry, "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's widow who nurtured the legacy of the seminal science fiction TV series after his death, has died. She was 76. Roddenberry died of leukemia Thursday morning at her home in Bel-Air, said Sean Rossall, a family spokesman.

At Roddenberry's side were family friends and her son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr.

Roddenberry was involved in the "Star Trek" universe for more than four decades. She played the dark-haired Number One in the original pilot but metamorphosed into the blond, miniskirted Nurse Christine Chapel in the original 1966-69 show. She had smaller roles in all five of its television successors and many of the "Star Trek" movie incarnations, although she had little involvement in the productions.

She frequently was the voice of the ship's computer, and about two weeks ago she completed the same role for the upcoming J.J. Abrams movie "Star Trek," Rossall said.

I met her once and got to speak with her, she was very nice. She will be missed as she has now gone beyond the starlight!

Perhaps my favorite Majel Barrett memory is her as Lwaxana Troi playing opposite Patrick Stewart's wonderfully horribly hammed-up bad Shakespeare version of Tennyson's "In Memoriam" (you know -- "tis better to have loved and lost, etc.") in the Menage a Troi episode, ending up in Picard's lap in the command chair looking as smug as one can be.

She was a hoot in some of those later roles.

RIP

She always seemed to have a very good sense of humor, and never seemed stuck up. I'll miss her. I'm glad she got to finish work on the new movie!

Those were, IMHO, the best Star Trek iterations.

That was CLASSIC and wonderful.

I'm so glad she was able to complete work on the new movie (hopefully it wont suck).

She did enough work as the ships computer to forever be used as it's voice in sampling form for eternity.

If humans ever do travel the stars those folks will be remembered for their contribution goofy as it will probably seem by then.

Though I am a relic who loves ALL the Star Trek itinerants (yep; I even like the DS9's) I agree with Ron's choice of the best Majel Barrett moment in Next Generation.

Never met her but I sure would have liked to...

RIP Mrs Roddenberry.
Thanks for the great memories...

Chris
