shave cream - who is using what

I used to be a single-weight person but lately I've been trying the multi-viscosity approach. First pass: regular lather with shave soap and a brush. Second pass: lighter weight. Spousal unit got me some fancy shave cream... absinthe? or was it hemlock? Something like that. I have not even considered synthetics yet.

It did recently occur to me, though... since I can afford my plane partly due to all the money I've been saving by using double edge blades, maybe I can afford a twin if I just stop shaving altogether?:idea:

I use just hot water, right after showering. Seldom use any shaving cream. I use Bic double-edged blades from Amazon. The disposable razors are expensive and hard to clean. I suppose rich guys use them once and toss them.
 
I used bar soap with glycerin for years, then realized that if I shave after a hot shower, I don’t need shaving cream or soap of any kind.
 
Cheapo Equate shave gel from Walmart and a dollar shave club razor. I shave in the shower...
 
Mach 3 with water. About every third day I’ll do a hot towel shave with Cremo and a brush to get a silky-smooth shave, and follow it up by slapping on Clubman bay rum.

Same here. Shaving in the shower was a revelation to me after my formative shaving years trying to use either an electric razor (awful) or using the standard shaving cream over the sink. Shaving in the shower is far superior. Oh, and I use throwaway double blade razors with a lubricating strip.
 
Now that I spent last weekend snaking the tub, maybe I'll have to revisit shaving in the shower.

I just use soapy water that I spray out of one of those cheap Walmart spray bottles on the part that I shave. I also use those cheap plastic disposables from Walmart. After shaving I put it in a small jar filled with baby oil. They last for months.

It is rust that makes a razor dull.
 
I apply a slight amount of body wash to my face and head, and go to town with the razor. A fresh razor I just use water and
 
Cremo, if I don't use shaving creme, I get sliced up like a .... well, I bleed.
 
Taylor of Old Bond Street does make some really, really nice shave cream. That and a badger hair brush do a great job. I’ve also used and really like Proraso.

I’m currently using some soap (Mühle) in a mug and it’s OK, but nowhere near as nice as Taylor’s. I’ve heard Mitchell’s Wool Fat Soap is really nice, but honestly - I miss Taylor’s Sandalwood and will likely go back to that.

They’re not actually on Bond Street any more, by the way… they’re on Jermyn Street. Neat store, I bought some shave cream there.
 
Edge Gel and Gillette Sensor Excel. Got free sample of them as a freshman in college and stayed with them.

I shower after I shave to clear up any residual shaving cream or whiskers.

I tried shaving in the shower but I prefer to watch what I’m doing.
 
My current iteration is a Supply.co single blade razor and brush. I used the shave cream that came with the Supply 'intro kit' until it was gone. I didn't like having to hassle with prepping the shaving cream in the cup every time I shaved and it felt like I wasted a lot in each batch. Now I'm trying a shaving soap puck from Viking Revolution (Amazon). So far I like having the puck in the bottom of the cup and I just whip it up (not to be confused with whipping it out) when I'm ready.
 
I use a gel (Tree Hot) with my Harry's blades.
 
In 231 days, I won't have to shave anymore... unless I want to.

In answer to the question, whatever is on sale when I need it.
 
Edge shave gel, Mach 5 razor. I only shave twice a week so the blades last a decent amount of time despite being overly expensive. I have fairly thick/coarse facial hair, but I have no reason to be clean-shaven every single day. I don't have the desire to make a 15-20 minute ritual out of a 3 minute process by preparing fancy shaving cream or cleaning up brushes and shaving dishes.

I do the mug, brush, safety razor routine almost every morning. It takes maybe half a minute or so longer than it did when I was using canned shave cream and disposable razor. Like anything, I found there's an online community that can make a career/passion/obsession out of simply shaving in the morning if you really want to go down that rabbit hole of silliness, but I guarantee your father and grandfather didn't spend any 12-20 minutes a day shaving.

I was paying quite a bit even for Dollar Shave Club and Dorco disposables. Now I buy a 100-pack of double edge blades for about 10 bucks and it lasts me, on average, between 18-24 months. If I splurge on the really, really nice shave cream I'll spend about $20-25 annually on it... a guy could certainly use the canned stuff, I just prefer to use the brush.

Weird. I keep my brush, doubled-edged razor, and shave soap in the shower. It takes about 30 seconds to wet the brush and lather the soap on it. Maybe another 10 to slather or on my face. I spend very little time at all actually shaving, since I'm just cleaning up arrive my beard, but I figure that would be the same time your spend with your Mach 5 anyway. The brush then gets a rinse and hung up. The whole process can't take more than 4 minutes, but I haven't timed it.

I'm mainly referring to the shave/ beard guys that make videos on their elaborate routines for what is a pretty simple process. The shave gel works fine, nothing to clean up. Pack of 8 Razor blades lasts me a year. Shave in the shower or at the sink, makes no difference aside from not being able to see anything you missed in the shower. If I were shaving daily or even every other day I might be looking for better alternatives. I generally only keep my beard in the cooler months, so I'm at the sink trimming that up every few weeks as well.
 
Edge gel, Supply Single edge razor with Schick blades. Took a month or so to get used to single edge, but no more ingrown hairs that I got with the multiblade razors.
