It looks like I'll be going down to the SF area quite a few times this summer. I used to go in to Oakland and hop the little BART shuttle that goes from OAK to the Coliseum station. However, the landing fees at OAK are now way out of sight for that many trips.

I thought about Livermore to the Pleasanton station, Hayward to the Hayward station, or Concord to the Concord station. All of them have FBOs that will take you over TO the station, but I've experienced difficulty getting a ride back.

Anybody got a good way to connect a GA airport to and from the BART system?

Jim

Yes - Hayward Jet Center, or whatever they're called at the moment, will pick you up from the Bart station. I've done that many times...

Out of curiosity, and since I may need to go there in June, what are the fees at Oakland?

I used to catch the bus from Hayward airport to the station.

When did OAK start charging landing fees. The only time that we have been charged a landing fee there was when using 11/29. I haven't been in there in over a year now. The new job I have has us going into SFO instead. Talk about getting charged. Using SFO is very expensive when comparing the two airports.

I don't think I was ever charged anything at OAK either, and I even used 11/29 multiple times to CAT II qualify there, and one time on a for real OEI situation after losing an oil line taking off out of Hayward and flew it down with a 90' ceiling. That's what made me decide to CAT II qual there.

There weren't any as of a few months ago. Ramp fee waived with fuel purchase...

OK, I stopped using OAK a year ago when I landed, parked the airplane, bought 10 gallons (full) fuel, came back later that afternoon and got dinged a fee (call it ramp, call it landing, call it tiedown, call it fan-me-pink) of $25.

How much fuel did you have to buy to get the fee waived? IF I'm full coming out of GOO, I won't have burned 8-10 gallons getting to OAK.

You know, I don't quite remember. I usually bought fuel from the self serve pumps, and then Kaiser would charge me something like $5. I'd call Kaiser and ask.

If I was only going to be parking for a few hours, I'd go to Hayward. No fees there for less than a day, at least last time I was there....

It always amazes me that pilots complain about having to pay for being serviced by a company. The FBO's are running on a pretty low margin. If they don't stay in business and you end up with only one FBO at an airport you are going to see really expensive charges. Personally I see this as stepping over the dollar to pick up the nickel. If those charges make flying too expensive then you should be driving.

The Signature FBO's in SFO and EWR are at airports where they are the only FBO available. Last time at Signature SFO we didn't need fuel. We were just repositioning to APC and the bill came out in the $250 range. I ended up paying the same amount in the Lear and the 421 on two occasions. My last trip through Signature EWR if we didn't take at least 150 Gallons of fuel there would be an $800 charge.

In the rest of the world FBO charges are quite expensive as well. If there is no FBO service available, paying a handler to take care of you may make your flights cost prohibitive.

One thing you can do is call the FBO before you go there and negotiate the charges ahead of time. If you don't you are going to always pay full price. I do this and always get the charges reduced. Especially if you are going to be using their FBO on a regular basis over the next couple of months.
