Turns out I'm going to be in SF for part of Fleet Week 2009. Basically, I'll have Saturday (10/10/09) afternoon available. Looking foward to seeing the Blue Angels again. I'm goin to be in town until the following Sunday. Anyone else want to get together at some point? (I'm there for OracleWorld, so Ill be tied up during the days Sunday through Thursday.)

BTW, Sean D. Tucker is giving away a free flight with him for attendees! Unfortunately, the weight limit is 250, and I'm over that, unless I stop eating until October!

Sounds like an incentive to stop eating to me. :D

Well, we got here Saturday, theoretically in time to see the Blue Angels that day. We opted to grab lunch on the way over to Fisherman's Wharf, before hopping on the bus to go over there. On the way, we heard the roar of the BA's as they went over the bus. We heard it a couple more times, then silence. A few minutes later we got off the bus, only to find that the BA's were done for the day, after a couple of what observers called "low passes." Apparently, the conditions on Saturday weren't good enough for them, though observers who have seen them in the past said that they were better than other years in which they have flown their low routine.

Today, Sunday, the weather was apparently better, and they flew their full routine. Unfortunately, I was in the conference the entire day and didn't get to see any of it!:( :( :(

I think that this is the first year since 2003 when I haven't seen them fly! :(

I heard them practicing from my mom's condo on Thursday. They were flying most of the early afternoon. I even caught a glimpse of one a few times. I'm glad they do a lot of publicity beforehand and that it is a big annual event, because that could startle a lot of people in the city who are not expecting to hear them. They seem to fly pretty low over the residential areas although I'm sure it is 1,000 feet. ;)

One of these days I'll remember to plan one of my visits for Fleet Week. I've been saying that for... decades.

CNN was talking about the "low" conditions. It is too bad that you were not able to see them.

You went to the conference??? While the Blue Angels were performing?? NERD!!!!!!!

:D:D

I was in the One Market building last week for work. We were in a conference room overlooking the bay, providing a great view of the Blue Angels' Thursday practice session. Pretty cool sight. It's not often that my aviation interests and work environment intersect in such a stunning way. I had to pause and explain to my boss and colleagues what was going on. All thought it was cool.

Of course, my trip was over just as Fleet Week was getting underway, so I didn't really get to see anything else.

Hope y'all had fun!

Matthew
