When people say "replaceable" they mean replaceable by doing normal things like popping a cover off or removing a single easy access screw to remove said cover and swapping a battery. Not doing a bunch of chancy stuff/ using special screwdrivers and possibly using a soldering iron.

Anything is replaceable with enough time, skill, and money.
 
So keep in mind the media (as always) is screwing up the messaging here.

This is not such a big deal. If your phone is slow (and there is software you can easily run on the App Store to confirm it), pay the $79 and replace your battery.

Whether iOS 11 is a buggy piece of crap or not wasn't the original topic. But I do not prefer to take the .0 version of any release.

I'm not drinking any koolaid. I'm trying to relate the engineering issues that might be behind such a decision. I often liken engineering to squeezing a balloon - sometimes to get more performance in one area, some must be given up in another.

Yup, Apple always controls stuff like this because the average user either doesn't care or isn't capable. Should they have had some option buried in settings? Probably, but this is far from a big deal.

I have the 5S and mini 2 as well, both 4 years old. I’ve been complaining about GP getting slow, maybe it’s IOS? Since it’s main use is aviation I should buy the Garmin Aera 660....oh wait that’s more expensive than the new Ipad pros!

I don’t need a tool to replace my laptop battery? Takes 5 seconds, 1 latch, why kind of laptop requires tools?
 
Someone wrote an article several months ago when they noticed their iPhones slowing down over time. Accused Apple of trying to force people to buy newer phones. The author took a beating in the press and social media, accused of being a conspiracy theorist, tinfoil hat, no data to support the theory, etc.
 
My 6s is still happily chugging away on 10.3.3, and as long as it continues to do so and the apps I like continue to function, no upgrade for me!
 
As a data point, I noticed a slowdown of my 6+ after the most recent iOS 11 updates.

It was primarily in the time it took to launch an app. Up to 11 seconds from clicking on the camera icon and being ready to shoot. Similar for a handful of other apps.

But my battery could also drain really quickly. Streaming a video without WiFi and I could be down to 16% in just a couple hours from an overnight full charge.

I just figured I was due for a new phone, and I’m very happy with my iPhone X so far. As I’ve said in other threads, with the amount recovered from selling the old phone, it’s something like $1/day to have such a phone.

Works for me.YMMV!

About your Iphone x:

In google, can you touch the microphone button and issue voice commands? I can't.
Mic doesn't work in Google maps either.
Apple support says "sorry, contact Google".

Does Voice Mail consistently allow you to listen to messages? Mine doesn't. Apple support says "sorry, maybe it will get fixed some day".
If I send the voice mail to email, I can listen to the message by playing the file, but most of the time, the file gets hung up in the outbox and won't go

Do your receive email in timely fashion? I didn't. Sometimes I would know I received email because I could see it on my PC, but not on my iphone. If I rebooted, then all missing email would appear. I had to reboot several times a day. Apple Support says contact AT&T (my email domain carrier)
I pretty much fixed this by downloading a different email package (Edison mail; much better and faster than Iphone mail).

I don’t use a lot of those features, but I just verbally asked Google for the capital of Lebanon, and it told me.

Verbally asked in Google Maps for the nearest Subway, and it gave me a list.

In both cases, it was the first time I used them on my new phone, and both apps asked me for permission to access the microphone, which I granted.

Mail seems to be getting to me very shortly after it was sent.
 
My iPhone 6 user has slowed down with age, as well. I complained to the manufacturer, and He said "it's to keep you from doing young, dumb stuff and seriously hurting yourself." I said "Gee, thanks! NOW you tell me?"
 
And to no one's surprise, the class action lawsuits have started....
 
I think I'm on 1.1.1.1 or whatever. It says there is an update but I haven't updated in a while.

I have a 6S Plus. Still runs great.

Hmm...I’ve had my 6S Plus for 2 and a half years and I am on iOS11. It runs great.
 
Batteries are replaced without fuss for iPhones while you wait at any number of places like Batteries+Bulbs. Upgraded my wife's for not much more than the cost of the battery itself.

I'm pretty sure you aren't getting OEM batteries. My previous 5 ended up in the trash after 3 battery replacements at one of the mall kiosk places. The last time the phone wouldn't even boot after attempting to charge it overnight. Verizon and APPL loved me since I had to buy a new locked $800 iphone that is buggy and sounds terrible.
 
Samsung and many others provide a much superior tool for day to day use. No expandable memory, apple pay is inferior, lightning cord, small phones, no headphone jack and many other reasons apple has been the P.T.Barnum of the phone game. Schadenfreude for me.
 
Imagine if Tesla would do something similar potentially one day? Several sites reported that Tesla juiced up the range of their cases in Florida during hurricane season.. so we know it's possible..

While "cool" I personally have a problem with that. Imagine if Cirrus incrementally degraded their performance on g1, g2, g3 planes.. you know the real reason behind all of that is so the majority of people say "my old phone is so slow now, it's time I upgraded to the new $1,000 iPhone!" I doubt it has anything to do with battery life.. if it did they would give you the option in the settings to extend life or not (just like most laptops can have the power settings adjusted depending on CPU, battery, etc.)
 
It's almost like they should let the customer choose if they want longer battery life or more performance.......

Dont worry Apple will add it later and call it an amazing new feature. The thinnest most wounderful power management imaginable!

Since it worked for you, I thought I would give it another try.

Went to Best Buy where I bought it. The pimply faced kid that sold it to me seemed very knowledgable, so he worked on it. No luck.
So he sent me to the Geek Squald counter.
The geek at the counter tried all the things that I and the sales guy tried. No luck.
So he called in a more senior geek.
He couldn't get it to work either, but he did install Google Assistant, and that did respond to voice commands, but I don't like Google Assistant. It is too cluttered.

So I went to the AT&T store.
"Sign in and take a number".
65 minutes later . . .
The first guy did all the things all the rest of us did, PLUS he updated ALL other apps on the phone. No Luck.
So he called another guy.

This guy listened for 5 seconds and said "reset all settings"
Oh No. Last time I did that I was putting settings back for months. But I did it.

And that fixed everything.

I've had this thing for about 3 weeks now. It might be my imagination, but it feels like it is slowing down already.

That’s the CPU breakpoint that’s usable it seems. With the non-S 6 only being less than two years old, screwing those customers is the problem. Early adopters of the “phablet” sized 6 Plus at high cost, and the phone is already a performance train wreck less than two years after it was discontinued.

The “S” models fare far better. It’s basically Apple saying “S” means we finally built what we intended to build but we sold a millions of the crappy model first.

And then banned buyers of their newer cheaper product from using their Superchargers a while back, as well as commercial users (Uber and Lyft) this week because they’re cheap asses and can’t or won’t pay to put in more of them.

Not really directly related to the thread but they’re behaving like greedy jerks also, is my point.
 
Expecting people to buy a $600-1000 phone every two years is an unsustainable business model IMHO. We've seen the apex of Apple it seems.
 
So let me get this straight. People here are complaining about Apple iPhone bloatware and the degradation of performance, when MS has been pulling the very same crap for the last 30 years on the very same people who own Windoze based PC's. Am I the only one seeing the irony here? :dunno:

Why is the fact that both companies are screwing their customers, ironic?
Or are you saying it is ironic that people are now complaining about it?
Or are you saying that since MS did it, we shouldn't complain when Apple does it?

I guess I just don't follow your logic.

I assume you know this and were being facetious but in case not, apple is worth 5 times more than Boeing ($900B market cap vs $175B).

Not that I don’t agree that they have been screwing up a lot of things lately...

Our PC capital outlay is down 50% for more performance over the last four years at the office, including upgrading everything to Win10.

Can’t say the same for our Apple expenditures.

Businesses don’t base IT purchases off of what happened a decade ago. This crap is commodity pricing now. Way harder to find good staff than to buy them three PCs and twenty monitors if it’ll keep them happy and productive.

Entire desktop machines and laptops cost less (especially after inflation is factored in) than we paid for green Wyse 60 dumb terminals when I started in this biz.

But yes, bloatware exists across all categories. And nobody likes it on any product. The industry isn’t interested in efficient code. Not even in the slightest.

Best way to fix that is to give all the developers five year old laptops, but you’d lose all of them to another company if you did that. Eating ones own dog food is important for high quality tech. Note there’s very little high quality tech. Embedded systems is about the last hope for that.
 
As an aside, I just sold my iPhone 6+ on eBay for $210.

The eventual resale value should be figured into the real cost of a phone over time.

As a data point, I don’t even remember what that 6+ cost me originally. But whatever it was, it was well worth it to me for the heavy daily use it got.
