I thought about trying to find a scrapped, but still functioning, altimeter.

Just thought it would be something cool to have on my desk. Or maybe mount inside my car to embarass my kids enough that they don't want to borrow it.

I've never removed or replaced one or seen one that hasn't already been installed. Would it still work - I would guess that if it's been scrapped, it probably won't? Where's a good place to try to find one? Costs?

Thanks.

Does your car have a pitot/static system? I imagine it would work without one, just not very accurately.

P.S. I've thought about doing the same thing, including an ASI, but the house boss laughed so hard, she nearly wet herself...untill she realized I was serious.

As previously mentioned, they turn up on eBay all the time. Prices are all over the place, but I'd expect to pay $50 or so for a used but still serviceable altimeter.

I have one that came out of my plane many years ago - when we installed an encoder. At that time buying a new altimeter didn't cost much more than overhauling the old one - so the existing altimeter became surplus. You don't
need to do anything to the altimeter other than devise a mounting. I wrapped mine in some thin foam sheet and stuck it in a cup holder in my truck. Worked fine - and still does years later.

I got one on e-Bay a few years ago. Worked great until it rolled of the seat of my Jeep and hit the floor. Movement is a bit sticky now. And I'm not going to pay to have it fixed. Sits on my dresser now.
