San Juan PR Aircraft Rental

I will be in San Juan for a few days off in September. I see a few places seem to rent from TJIG, Isla Grande in San Juan.

Can anyone recommend a specific school? Also no one has rates posted so whats the going rate on a 172 down there? Do they mind if you land at other local airports like VQS?

It sounds like going to Vieques, over the central mountains and by the radio antenna would be good. Any other spots to visit?

I am think ~2.5-3 hr max for viewing would be good. Is that reasonable to go to the islands and back?

Hi Dan,
I'm currently living in the San Juan area. I'd call Isla Grande Flying School to rent (787-722-1160). Rates are high, when I got checked out in their 172S it was $220 with the instructor, and I think $190 for just the airplane. They will let you take it to VQS, but not Culebra (CPX). They have a three hour minimum for the day, but if it's a weekday you might be able to negotiate a lower minimum. On the weekends they are busier so I don't think they'd lower the 3 hour minimum.

I believe they also have a 150/152, Skycatcher, G1000 172, carbureted 172, and an Arrow I think. I'm not sure of the rates on any of these.

Everything is pretty close, it should be about 30 minutes each way to VQS. Less over the radio telescope at Arecibo, but I haven't flown over that yet.

I saw them and wad curious how much they would charge.

How long was the checkout flight?

The checkout was pretty normal, went out to the practice area for maneuvers, emergency procedures, and back to the airport for landings. It took just over an hour.

Take a look on their website for the River & Tango transitions for transiting SJU's airspace. They are pretty simple, but good to be familiar with them.
