Actually after WWII airline pilots flying without pilot certificate was not that uncommon. No one ever asked to see the cert.
Maybe not surprising? Tons of experience likely, perhaps a lot of time. Maybe better "practical" quals than new guys. . .

what is so shocking? I don't know the rules is SA but back then in the US you did not have to have a ATP to be a FO for an airline. I only had a commercial when I got hired at my first airline, I got my ATP when I upgraded. it was a ATP/type ride, pretty much standard practice until the rules changed. After the rule change when a FO went in for recurrent, they were given a ATP/PIC type ride and issued a new cert. no big deal. If the rules were same over there the only shocking part is that nobody ever caught it.

In SA, you have to upgrade to ATP within 5 years of getting a FO job.
The headline and much of the first third of the article makes it seem like he had no license at all but it seems he at least had a commercial? That makes it even more odd that he would make "some strange turns after encountering turbulence" I mean he's been doing the role of FO for 20 years and is at least a trained pilot...
ATP doesn't really add anything from a training/flight perspective... Its all about book knowledge and based on existing experience which this guy has in spades having done it for 20 years.

I used to have a blue polo shirt that led to a number of frustrated and confused customers at Best Buy, after the person they thought worked there told them that the HDMI cables were over with the refrigerators or that they should buy all the HD-DVD movies they could since the store was not able to keep them in stock for long.

I got news for you: they'll pay you to do that, and, as a pilot, you can pass as mentally handicapped by default.
They need you now! Wal-Mart announced that they are doing away with the greeters. Soon most Wal-Mart shoppers will be un-greeted. Oh the horror!

I think they've reconsidered, or at least are gonna try to reassign those handicapped workers.
