Rusty pilot looking for affordable way to get back into flying

Hello fellow aviators,

I want to get back into flying again after a long break due to finances. What would be an affordable way to get back into the swing of things? I am in northern California Sacramento area.

Welcome.

A little more info will get you better answers. What was your experience before, how long did you lay out, what are you looking to do, and what is your definition of affordable?

In my case, I was out 20 years, so went and got a medical, checked prices at all the rental,places, did some self study on the FARs and airspace (class A,B,C,D,E did not exist when I trained), and went and did a BFR spread over three flights.

Make friends with someone that has more money than brains. Convince them how awesome it would be to own an airplane. Then after they buy it, casually let them know that it needs to be run 100 hours a year to fight off corrosion and then offer to help get it there.

I'm only 70% joking, BTW.
 
I have about 300 total ours and been out for a year. Yes need to find a wealthy person in Sacramento area who is open to a partnership.
 
You need to find a club or a pilot that’s willing to share his plane.
 
I found the Cessna140 a great affordable burger chaser and have a club membership w a nice 180 hp 172- a lot of versatility at my disposal for less than $25k.... a gas sipper and a pretty capable 4 place unit, the TW is fun to learn and fly! I hadn’t flown for 4 years when I bought mine in November...
 
Get an experimental - mid time VFR RV-4 and 6's are cheaper than new SUV to buy and not much more to operate and insure.
 
Davis has the cheapest rental rates in the area (EDU). Flying isn't cheap, for sure. There aren't too many clubs around here. There is one at Lincoln, but it needs a buy in (equity) and there used to be one out of Davis.

I don't know if that's good advice or not. Yes, the OP has only been out a year but if he's saying he's rusty, then an hour or 2 with a CFI isn't a bad idea before he just jumps in and takes off.

To the OP, hard to say what's the most affordable in your area, however, I know experimentals are usually a lot cheaper if you can find one to rent/buy. Now I don't know if that meets your needs or not but worth a look.
