Today, I was late for class because a funeral procession of at least 400 cop cars around the state and a massive roadblock motorcade in front of it was stopping up traffic. There were three helicopters overhead (could not tell if they were police or news) and 1200 people ended up attending the funeral. I have no problem with this, and even respect it for a police officer killed in duty...
BUT I think it's a HUGE waste of taxpayer money and resources to do this for... wait for it... a police DOG! (The dog died of stab wounds). It's also a bit of an insult to our service men and women who give their lives all the time and get no such hero's funeral. Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Yes, I think this should be in the Spin Zone.

Certainly it's overkill, and a little bit odd yes.

Why? If someone is offended by that, their skin has the thickness of a soap bubble.

That is just weird.

Yep.

I get the sense that in many instances, we treat animals better than humans in the US of A...

Because don't get me started on treating police dogs like they are human officers. Cop shoots your dog because it is barking at him, no problem - you shoot police dog because it is chomping on your leg, big problem. See, Spin Zone. LOL.

I was thinking you were being a bit harsh, until I read "Police Dog"....

wowzer, thats a ***** much aye...... *this just in, Snoop Lion and Little Bow Wow send their condolences to Scruffy the Police Dog HERO*

Shut up peasants our masters dogs are royalty

I think we should treat police cars as if they were police officers and any damage caused to one as felony assault.

Wouldn't surprise me if certain populations have been charged with felony assault after innocent fender benders with cop cars.

I agree, we should even go as far to add Police Bicycles, Scooters (segways) and Motorcycles.

And the perp is sooooo screwed when he goes to court.

Why do you hate dogs?:wink2:

Good point. And this is not about respecting police officers or loving dogs. Check and check for me on that.

You know, we hold events in stadiums holding 80,000 people and do not need to disrupt everyone's lives for that. I think they could have had their memorial for the DOG and managed to keep traffic flowing. Maybe if they hired some off-duty police officers?

Oh yeah, we have people who will fly a mutt dog across the country who wouldn't pick up someone off the side of the road if their life depended on it.

Per the link below, the suspect was a homeless man who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. Prone to paranoia. Sequence of events leading to the dog's death seems to indicate suspect was responding to repeated threats from a policeman. His mental state seems to have been causal in his reaction.

No indication that any government agency or the 1200 people at the funeral for the dog would have shown any extraordinary kindness or generosity toward the suspect back when they could have done something more to preempt such an event. Think any of those 1200 people will now show the same level of support for the homeless mentally handicapped or unstable humans who periodically die ignoble deaths on the street that they did for the dog?

(Better to be a dog living with humans than a human living with humans? :()

In our social order, schizophrenics are about 12 steps below that dog's feces.

You're not describing me. I picked up a hitchhiker last week and gave him the $2.00 that he asked for (I'm pretty sure he was going to use it to buy gin from our conversation, I'd have given him $15 to at least get some decent bourbon.but, he didn't ask) and my wife found my newest dog emaciated deep in the swamp.

Shouldn't the handler cop be charged with cruelty to animals for knowingly sending the K9 unit into a situation where he knew the perp had a knife? :dunno:

Well now aren't you just a veritable Flying Mother Teresa?:rofl::rofl:

I am picking...down there big fella...simmer down...

When one of my best friends took an RPG to his helo in Afghanistan and all on board were lost we gave him a funeral like that back in Colorado. I got NO problem with a police dog getting one either. And yes, in general I like animals a heck of lot more than most people.

So funny cause it's true

I turned down a random guy for a ride the other day because I didn't totally buy his story about his wife kicking him out of the car "30 miles ago"

Turns out he was telling the truth.

The hubbub in Pittsburgh was whether the US flag should have been at half staff for the dog...

I think I remember this happened in DC. Woman was finally dispatched. Her child was spared........(I was going to use a smiley,or a grin but..)

An American killed in combat should get a funeral at least as grand as the dog. We all know fireman and police do great service but sometimes their funeral processions are not only time consuming for those who must work and drive but cost the taxpayers a lot of money. They know the danger and they are well paid.

It is our ruling class sending us a message of how much more important their lives are than our own. Their funerals are royalty events, whereas if one of us "civilians" die on the job, it is of little consequence or importance to our society. "Honoring" their dogs in such a fashion just sends the point home.

We are a divided country. I think more and more people are waking up to that fact.

Yip, when i was in a SAP/ABAP programming training course and the 55 year old gated community mother of three piped up and just RIPPPED into the wanna-be-police officers in training across the hall. I knew police antics had gone mainstream. When she said "They're in there getting high on all that PPPPOOOOWEERRRR" the entire class erupted into laughter.

Could you translate this into civilian?

Do we really need two threads in the same month about the same topic? I didn't join this site to bash police officers, but I guess that's all this site is now....

What other thread was about a public funeral for a dog?

Near the upper right hand corner of the page there is a drop down menu button titled "thread tools". Click on it and there will be an "ignore this thread" option. Click on that and you'll never have to see this topic again.

I'm no fan of this topic. But I'm no fan of random censorship either. This is "Hangar Talk" after all and the rules are:

Hangar Talk Open forum for discussion of any topic you like, aviation related or otherwise (but no spin zone material, see below).

Virtually all topics in this forum are permitted - so long as they are discussed in a civil manner.

NOTE: Politics and religion and any other topic likely to become highly charged must be posted in The Spin Zone. To gain access to the Spin Zone, click this link and join the Spin Zone group.

It appears to me like this topic is fully compliant. Well, except for maybe John Baker's comments but that's the norm for him.

Actually it is not at all. It is a forum, a place where pilots can bat around the many assorted things they have on their minds. Many of these things can be objectionable from time to time, but that is why it is called a forum.

Attempting to stifle forum conversations runs contrary to what this site is about, a place where we can have our thinking validated or challenged by others.

If you joined this forum in the belief that it will always toe the line with your own beliefs, or only discuss topics you approve of, then perhaps you need a more controlled forum that is always the way you like it. You might try this one http://forums.officer.com/ or perhaps this one http://www.firehall.com/forum/

It is just one of the unique aspects of POA. There is an incredible amount of 'anti-authority' prevalent here. You won't change it. Pretty much just need to get used to it.

anti authority is a bad thing? Now that the hippies are all grown up and running the gov't.
