Gold Coast pilot, glider crash into field

A man from the Gold Coast neighborhood flying without a pilot’s license, a certificate of flightworthiness or insurance was not hurt when the aircraft he was piloting made an emergency landing and crashed into a roadside ditch Wednesday night near west suburban Oswego.

At 6 p.m. 52-year-old Michael E. Lawrence, of 680 N. Lake Shore Dr., took off from Cushing Field in Newark, IL in a two-seated Ultralight glider, according to a release from Illinois State Police Joliet District. He flew east of Newark when he began to have problems.

At 7:52 p.m., the aircraft experienced engine failure and Lawrence did an emergency landing -- crashing into a field near Illinois Rte. 71 at Chicago Road, according to an Illinois State Police Joliet District trooper.

Not a pilot.

Not a glider.

So at least they got right that he must be rich.

It doesn't say he took off in a glider, he landed in a glider! :D

And if it's actually an ultralight, saying he doesn't have a pilot's license is like saying that a regular plane didn't file a flight plan.

I want to see how he took off in a glider - that must have been a BIG rubber band!

It could have been a self launch glider. Some are pretty capable aircraft... But then, they also called it an ultralight.
But it had two seats. :dunno:

Actually it says "two seat glider" and if that one fact is correct a pilot's license (certificate really) is required.

Just going on the OP

Well we know it wasn't a two seat ultralight anything since by definition ultralights can only have one seat. If it has two seats, a pilot cert is needed no matter what you call it even if one seat is empty.

But what about the flight plan???! DID HE FILE A FLIGHT PLAN???????????

I've flown hundreds of time without a certificate of flightworthyness nor a pilot's license.

So all of those 2 seat "Ultralights" that pre-date the LSA rules suddenly vaporized when the rules were adopted?

There was a window to convert them, but that has passed, and more than a few didn't get converted to LSA.

Most likely that's what this was - a fat ultralight that looks like a "hang glider" and was never converted.

They either got converted to ELSA or became illegal to fly. Of course they were illegal to fly except when instruction was being rendered (and a few other special circumstances) before the rule changes but there was a lot of "cheating" going on. I'm "certain" the cheating stopped when the new rules came into effect.
