Let’s face it - We are in the middle of a global crisis that will change life as we know it. Math and facts are even considered political now in this hyper-partisan environment, and it is impossible to have a discussion about COVID-19 without in inevitably being political.

Reopen the SZ to lessen the burden on the MC, and let people talk politics.

Brian's board has a Politics and Other Difficult Subjects area - basically a Spin Zone, except that there is still a Play Nice rule there. The kind of ad hominem free-for-all that is Pilot Spin doesn't go on there, and Brian is pretty good at making sure of that.

So there are alternatives.

It will only 'change life as we know it' if you let it.

Is it any good? Or is it an echo chamber? I see a couple names over there who are very fact averse types.
Basically an echo chamber. Once in a great while a truly good discussion gets started, but then the ad hominems start flying and it devolves into chaos. I've pretty much given up on it.

It's a good place if you want to be free to say absolutely anything, though, insult anyone you want.

Most pilots do have very bad political opinions so I find this unsurprising.

Well, the pile of bodies will inevitably lead to some changes.

I said at the beginning of march that due to our economic priorities here in the US we will be harder hit than any other country, and it’s looking like I will be right.

Conversely, Pilot's Place tends to squash conversations that don't follow the owner's ideology. It's essentially the opposite "echo chamber" compared to PS.

But, as stated earlier, there are choices out there.

Pilotspin sounds like a real hub of intellectual activity!

To an extent, maybe, but less so than here. MANY discussions can take place there that wouldn't be allowed here. The one exception I can think of is that the owner is intolerant of generalizations about groups of people... but other than that, his political ideology doesn't seem to result in too much "squashing".

Certainly, both sides of a partisan debate can be aired there without interference as long as ad hominems and anti- whatever minority group statements are avoided.

And what David is looking for - discussing COVID-19 freely even when the argument waxes political - that's not only possible there, but has been going on for quite a while.

The purple board also has their version of the spin zone. But be ready for a barrage of intolerant responses from those who you don't see eye-to-eye with David. Pilots' boards are monopolized by boomers.

Are you on pilots place Tim?
I signed up but I never (very seldom) go there...it's a pretty boring site. Purple is more active, but not necessarily more tolerable. I don't go there very often these days either... I'm not sure if you could put up with the main players over there. A few of them make Rush look like a bleeding heart liberal.

Most of that crowd got the FB boot from me not too long ago.

Limbaugh or our Rush (Rushie)?

Seconded. Gave up after it seems that a couple of users can't keep from resorting to the ad hominems and they tend to label anyone who isn't staunchly Republican as a "liberal" or "snowflake". Gets old quick. Takes a relatively civil discussion and turns it into a poo-throwing contest.

Shocking!
