relocating to Dallas to complete instructor ratings

Hey guys, so I'm going to be relocating to Dallas once I finish my commercial SEL which will be about a month if not a little less. I know the market is terrible right now. If I get my cfi, cfii, and potentially mei at 1 school, will I be more likely to be hired by them assuming I don't fail those ratings? I currently have a failure from instrument from a communication error with atc. Also what schools in the north Dallas are recommended to get my instructor ratings and have a good chance of taking on in-house pilots? Also are there any good flying clubs worth joining for the occasional $100 burger? Any and all advice/input is appreciated. I wouldn’t expect them to hire after you complete, unless there’s a formal contract in writing that says so.

Gotcha. So follow up question. Would you know by chance how difficult it is to do independent teaching?

That’s the traditional way it works, but make sure you talk to the owner and make sure he’s game

No one is going to write it in a contract however

Going independent is much easier once you have at least a few passed student checkrides under you.

I would be sure you’ll be instructing in a twin before you spend money you don’t have on the MEI

Okay. Yeah Im not sure about mei. Thats why its “potential” but i also hear its one of the deadliest ratings. Also how do you get those “first few checkrides passed” if you dont get hired anywhere? Ive seen its a really rough market right now.

Why? What’s the reason for the metroplex. It’s a big and expensive place to live. OTOH, a lot of non-aviation jobs to help pay the bills until the fickle aviation market starts to warm.

As for what schools would hire their own product, you’re better off having that conversation with them. More importantly, unless you have a CJO (and even then it’s not a sure thing) when you start their program, their word isn’t worth much.

Good advice, thanks. And to answer your first question. I’m 20 and basically my parents want me to move out once I get my commercial, so I’m going to be moving in with a relative thats in the dallas area. I plan to get a job down there until i have consistent hours as a cfi. Ideally it would be at an fbo. And I understand their words wont mean much unless its on paper but at least itll give me an idea on what to expect from them.

Independent teaching usually requires some time under your belt - preferably at least a year of teaching under some mentorship. It's a big ask for people to trust you as a rookie with their toys.

DFW is pretty saturated at the moment, IMO. Wouldn't ever tell someone not to try, but you aren't doing yourself a huge favor jumping into a school of fish if you want to stand out. OTOH, yeah, if you're willing to do OTHER work, there are jobs around for people with a good work ethic and can show up on time, not afraid to try something new.

Absolutely. Theres nothing to hide and I learned a valuable lesson from it.

I’d talk to schools, get your CFI with one of them with them saying they’ll hire you after

Do it and start making money with your certs

Get your II at a discounted rate from the school you work at, if they have a multi and want you in it wash and rinse with that
