Why is the time to rebuild on the engine in my Cessna 172 (160HP) so much longer then the engine in a 182 (1500 hours vs 2000).

I am no mechanic by even a stretch of the imagination but I'll give it a shot. You didn't say which engines you were referring to but a engine that is rated for higher compression or higher rpm would generally have a lower TBO. I know the O-360 and the IO-360 is one example of a Lycoming engine with different TBO's. Continental had the O-300 and the GO-300. The first was rated for 145hp and installed in the C-172's the later was rated for 175hp with gear reduction and higher rpm's and installed in the C-175's. With the higher rpm's the engine would not last as long. I hope this helps a little. :cheerswine:

More horse power more wear maybe? I am only guessing. Isn't TBO just a suggestion from the manufacture?:dunno:

Simply put, the service bulliten says so because the manufacture believes that number is a half life and safe figure.
