Hey Guys,

Here's some video we shot of the raffle plane on Saturday... the music is a bit cheeseball and I need to work on my crosswind landings, but overall I think it's pretty good.

Keep in mind that you only have until July 17 to get your tickets, and we're giving her away on July 18! They're only $50 each and the money supports a great aviation museum!

Enjoy!

We missed you this past Saturday, Spike... any chance you'll make it down for the drawing on 7/18?

Sorry, PJ-

After the late launch for SGR, the huge headwinds (35+) southbound, the tight schedule w/ family and the lack of interest from anyone but... ummm... me, it became clear that, to fly over to HOU would be a serious MLE (Marriage Limiting Event).

Am I too late to buy a ticket, and if not, can I buy it by phone?

That video is cool, and the plane is so pretty it almost looks like a FlightSim model. You are lucky to fly it... maybe you'll win it! Love the sound of that little six, smoooooth.

yea are you guys set up for paypal or anything?

How does one buy a raffle ticket, and how many tickets have been sold so far?

No worries, Spike, I completely understand. You have until July 17 to purchase tickets, and we can take a credit card over the phone at 713-454-1940.

I do feel very fortunate that I get to fly her, as she is a great-flying airplane and that little six is a very smooth engine. She is rigged just about perfectly too... coming back from GLE a couple of weeks ago we had her trimmed out so well at 5500ft that we were able to fly her hands-off with just the tiniest bit of right rudder pressure. She is a pretty plane too, thanks in no small part to the Boy Scouts who were washing planes at LBX a few weeks back to raise money. We were able to trade them a ticket for a thorough plane-washing, and they did a fantastic job... she just sparkles now.

I do have my hat in the ring, so to speak, so I'm hoping that I win her.

No, unfortunately we're not set up for online purchasing. We plan on launching a redesigned website this year, so hopefully we'll be able to do something like that in the future. But, for right now, you just have to call the number above and we'll run your credit card over the phone, then mail you the ticket stub. Alternatively, you can mail a check made out to HAHS (Houston Aeronautical Historical Society) in the amount of $50 per ticket to:

Raffle Ticket Sales
The 1940 Air Terminal Museum
8325 Travelair Rd.
Houston, TX 77061

Please be sure to include your return address and the number of tickets you'd like to purchase, and we'll mail your ticket stubs to you.

Good luck!

Is that including 7/17? I'd like to buy a few on that day if I can.

Yes, you can buy tickets up to and including July 17. You do not have to be present on July 18 to win, but it's always more fun if you are!

So PJ you going to deliver it to the winner?
If I won I would have to buy a comercial ticket and fly down there. Then fly back 943 Nautical miles back to MN. Then I have to find a hanger. I guess I would have to pay taxes on it too. Im not sure it is really worth this much work.

Ok who am I kidding. It would great go to Texas and pick up my plane and fly cross country back home. What an experience my plane and the longest cross country I would do to day. So I bought one ticket but it only takes one to win.

You should try to get them to set up an online system to buy tickets. I bought one this time and last time be phone. It was painless but online would just be easyer.

I think there are some legal issues with selling raffle tickets online. :(

Due to the legalities of the raffle we have to "deliver" it to the winner or the winner's agent at Hobby Airport. So, unfortunately I cannot do a delivery flight. But, I'd be glad to be your co/auto-pilot for the trip back to MN and take the human mailing tube back home... unless you're going to bring another friend with you for that task ;-).

I believe that's the biggest issue. That and it would be cost-prohibitive at this point to set up a secure shopping site that interfaces with our credit card processing service and still meet our level of PCI compliance. We could probably do something via PayPal, but I don't know for sure. So, for the foreseeable future, we're doing it by phone. We did get a new phone system with additional lines, now we're just trying to find volunteers to staff them and field the high call volume we're experiencing.

As of last Saturday, we had cleared 1300 tickets sold... still pretty good odds for winning! Call 713-454-1940 to get yours!

:( apparently they stopped selling tickets at noon today.

I was planning on buying a bunch today, but when I called, they said they're done. I thought it was going until 5pm. C'est la vie.

Yep.

I called at about 12:40. Bum-mer!

Yup, the ticket sales ended at noon CDT today, pursuant to the language on the backs of the raffle tickets, in order to give us sufficient time to collect all outstanding tickets so the independent accounting firm can account for all of them to certify the raffle tomorrow. I believe we sold more than 1500 tickets, though we don't know the exact number as of yet. This was more than 200 tickets beyond our expectations, and the money will go a long way to help out our museum.

So, here's the schedule for our Wings & Wheels event tomorrow:

10:00a - Doors Open
10:30a-10:45a - Current raffle plane and new raffle plane will arrive in formation and make several passes in front of the crowd to "pass the torch".
11:00a-11:30a - Lunch starts being served.
12:01p - Tickets for the new raffle plane go on sale
2:00p - Raffle winner is drawn and prize is awarded

We'll be posting some live updates throughout the day on our Twitter feed - http://twitter.com/N7433A.

So, who's flying to HOU tomorrow to witness the event?

I would totally be there, but its just too long of a trip for the weekend :(

But if I win, I'll find a way to make it :D

Well if you win and you need a place to stay while you're here, I've got a guest room I'm willing to offer up. Sorry that you couldn't get more tickets today...

If (I mean WHEN) I win I might take you up on that. I could use it as a learning trip since you have been flying it and should know about it. Other wise Im sure it would be hard to find a friend to come with me.:D

I believe we sold more than 1500 tickets
Still not bad odds with 1500 tickets sold.

Current raffle plane and new raffle plane will arrive in formation
Be sure to inform us on the newest plane.

TROY: I FEEL IT IN MY BONES- IT'S YOUR PLANE! :D

It HAS to be!! I signed up for a Twitter account just so I could follow posts on my cell phone! I've got a one-way reservation on SWA to HOU for tomorrow afternoon, and ordered custom license plates with the N-number from TxDOT. ;-)

From Twitter:

Congratulations to Mr. Larry Smith of Friendswood, TX, the winner of the 1957 Cessna 172 raffle plane!

He lives about 10 miles SSE of Hobby--I hope he was on site to see his name drawn!

Looks nice, though I don't know much about the 175. What's the useful load on it?

The 175 is basically a 175-hp C172. I think when it was out, all the 172's were only 145hp still, and I don't think a 180-hp C172 came from the factory until the SP. (The previous C172XP, however, was 195hp.) So, think of this as Cessna's very early version of the C172SP.

Is the Garmin 155 IFR certified?

According to Garmin, yes:

The Garmin GPS 155 and 165 TSO are the world's first GPS receivers to be fully certified to FAA TSO-C129, Class A1 standards for non-precision approach use, giving you the freedom and convenience of flying IFR from takeoff to touchdown with GPS as your navigation reference.
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=169&pID=492

Remember, though, that each particular installation must be certified for IFR, so PJ will have to tell us if this one is.

Well, the event was well-covered by Troy via Twitter - thanks Troy!

Yes, the new raffle plane is a 1958 Cessna 175. It features a Continental GO-300 engine, which is basically the same engine that is in 172's of that era, but with a reduction gearbox between the engine and the prop that allows it to produce 175 hp for takeoff. The 175 shares a type certificate with the 172XP and 172RG, among many others.

The plane itself received its IFR certification in 2008, but I do not believe that the Garmin 155 installation is IFR certified. I'll have to double-check on that for you. Even so, it has been expertly restored, and the interior and exterior are both absolutely gorgeous. Please feel free to check out all of the pictures under the Wings & Wheels page for July:

He lives about 10 miles SSE of Hobby--I hope he was on site to see his name drawn!

Unfortunately, he was not present. He's a local CFI that was actually leading a GHAFI seminar when we called. He said that he plans to do some instructing in the plane, and we hope that he can use it to share the joy of flight with many people!

PJ, are the planes the museum raffles off donated, or does the museum shop for a well-priced restoreable example and fix it up to be raffled?

Neither. We find a reasonably-priced example and buy it as-is. Then we just do the required maintenance while we have it.
