Is there a turf runway suitable for taildraggers in Manhattan? Of course not.

There is, however, a mockup of a turf runway complete with a mock biplane in position and holding. And a real windsock. The size of the plane appears to be at least 1/2 scale or larger.

(I do have to admit that I haven't seen this recently, but I used to see it frequently. Since 9/11 my viewing platform has become off limits to us mere mortals. However, Google Maps still has its picture, so I assume it is still there.)

Where is it? What kind of plane is in position?

Photo to follow.

Want a turf runway come on down here to Texas. I fly off a airport that has 3 turf runways with nice trees on each end of them except one approach. It is only 1 of 2 airports that I know of that has 3 turf runways in the country. Anyone know of another airport that has this many turf runways? Mine is Kittie Hill 77T located outside Leaner Tx and the other one is somewhere in New York State.

I remember the taildragger on astroturf in Manhatten. It is on a rooftop in lower Manhatten (Tribeca but not sure of the address). I've seen it a few times from over the years but not recently. I think it was a yellow Cub if I recall correctly.

Correct! 77 Water Street, downtown Manhattan

It is either a Cub or a Sopwith Camel. I'm pretty sure it is a Biplane so now I have to go find a way to see it again. I used to be able to go out onto a balcony on the 60th floor of 40 Wall Street, accessed from the stairwell and squeeze your hand through the chain link door to open the latch, and then step out on the balcony... and there it was below.

The attached photo has the runway "circled" with an arrow pointing to the plane. This photo is from Google Maps. You can also see the street address "77" at the departure end but it is clearly not a mock runway number as it is sideways to the runway.

This is very clever. I can't see the runway or the plane in the photo, though. Maybe I need stronger reading glasses (again).

here's another photo of 77 Water St from Google Earth. You can clearly see the "runway". The plane is on the right side.

I don't know about landing on it without arresting gear, but I'd take off from it.:D

Did you see the video of the supercub doing the 18ft takeoff? Also the cub doing spot landings and did a full stop in about 3 times it's length?

With a little practice that runway shouldn't be a problem in or out.
