What do you think of this as a gift? I have to figure this out today...

"Garmin nüvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition"

And do you think 6 yrs old is too young for a small camera?

Nothing like last minute shopping..

What about a couple of throw-away cameras? Send a check for the processing to Mom and Dad.

Sounds cool. And as his sister you can also give him a little sass about how this way he will not need to stop and ask for directions and jeopardize his manhood. ;)

A little PAS camera is probably fine, maybe even one of those little video cameras would be ok. But I would be more inclined to give a 6 year old a toy that is also a learning experience.

Thanks. Nuvi bought. Still trying to determine if he's too young for the camera. It would be a digital Nikon.

Probably the only real risk is if the camera gets dropped and breaks. So, if there's a slightly ruggedized version out there, that might be good.

Get a cheap camera. Someone that young won't care - and would be likely to take it apart to see how it works (not that I'd know anything about that :rolleyes:). There are dirt-cheap cameras that don't have great resolution but are suitable for a youngster. Think of it as the analogy of an Instamatic (tm) in our day.

Six might be a little young, but what the heck, you're doing your part to stimulate the economy. I had a camera in the form of a rifle when I was about eight, until my mother "inadvertently" sat on it and broke it! :) I'd go with an el cheapo until you know that the kid likes it and can take care of it. Nikon seems a little overkill for someone that young.

Edit: Okay, Bill just said something similar.

Discovery flight.

You do still fly, right Elizabeth???

:D

I wouldn't get a Nikon unless it's a really cheap one. Too much $$$ and the kid won't appreciate it. Get something that's less expensive, as the kid will probably break it.

At 6 I had a camera. It used 110 film (remember that?). It's a great idea, IMO, and will help get the kid interested in photography, Photoshop, and the stuff he/she is taking pictures of.

If she wants to do that for the kids, I'll come down to JYO with some small logbooks and help her out. Provided she buys me beer. ;)

They live near Erie. If my Uncle Dave were still flying, he'd already have him up there.

Although I may get them all tickets to SC this spring to see the ocean in which case a discovery flight would be nice.

Ted, when they finally get down here, deal!

Seeing as SC is my second home, Beth, that'd probably be doable. Of course a "discovery flight" in an Aztec is a little unusual, but there's nothing wrong with that. :)

If they're 6, they're no larger than some of the rescue animals you carry. :rolleyes:The Aztruck would work fine!

Hey, I'd like a Disco Flight in an Aztec, haha!

OK, I got the camera. Check it out:

Nikon Coolpix L20 10MP Digital Camera with 3.6 Optical Zoom and 3 inch LCD (Deep Red)
79 BUCKS SHIPPED!

Good point! We could probably stuff at least 12 of them in at a time! ;)

That looks like an appropriate camera for a 6 year old. Good deal!

I'm now having visions of Ted putting in a mirrored ball and colored floor lights.

ACK, now I'm getting a picture of him in the white suit, too... MAKE IT STOP!!!!!

Hmm...

Well, I got here a little late, but good choices. We gave our son-in-law a portable GPS for his birthday a few years ago. Our daughter was thrilled. "Directionally challenged" is an understatement with him and now he can find he way around. I'm sure your brother with like it. And $79 for a camera for your nephew sounds great.

Merry Christmas!
