President’s Day airport scavenger hunt

How many airports named after a president can you log on Presidents Day, Monday, February 20?

Give yourself 5 points for landing or taking off from an airport named for a president. JFK, DCA, IAH, and LIT immediately come to mind, but there are more.

Add 2 bonus points if the FAA identifier is the namesake president’s initials (ex JFK, LBJ).

You can still earn two points if at least the location the airport is associated with is named after a president (ex AWG, IAD, BWI).

Flights must be legal (ARROW, current, etc) and you must be required cockpit crew. Operation must occur Monday, February 20, local time.

US presidents only (sorry M43). Refer to the chart supplement as the official source of airport names, identifiers, and locations.

My first thought was, "There's an LBJ airport??!?" But no, there's not. (There is a KLBJ radio station in Austin, TX, but I don't think they'd appreciate you trying to land an aircraft there.)

My mistake. Somewhere along the way the identifier changed. Still worth 5 points tho. PPR.

There is. And it’s still active; PPR required. Unless you know Lyndon, you’re not landing there though.

Hmm, I might have a shot at this, as Abraham Lincoln capital airport (SPI) is about 45m away, and pretty close to Lincoln, IL (AAA). Then a short hop over to Quincy (UIN). After that, depending how strict the rules are, there's Jacksonville, Taylorville, & Mount Vernon.

Unfortunately (fortunately) I already have other flying plans tomorrow...

That's tough. "having a president's name" would be much easier for me than "named after a president".

That job thing sounds lame. But the airport name brings up a question: How many points do POA’s naval aviators get if they land on a ship named for a president tomorrow?

Interesting idea.

I searched AOPA airports, and there are a half-dozen or so named Washington, and about the same for Lincoln. Probably they’re named after the presidents. There are two named Harry S. Truman, middle initial and all, and the same for John F. Kennedy, so I’m pretty sure they were inspired by a POTUS.

So then I tried some historically obscure and unpopular presidents, and I found that California has KCCR Buchanan Field Airport, South Dakota has Harding County Airport, and Alabama has a Hoover Helipad, but these three are all named after local people, not presidents. Just the same, somehow Minnesota has Fillmore County Airport that’s actually named after Millard Fillmore, and Washington State has Pierce County airport that’s really named after Franklin Pierce - what were they thinking?
