A few weeks ago, Lance F's home base (9A1) showed up in a NOTAM list as closed. The entire airport! We chatted and he said yes it was true. Yesterday, I flew by to see what it looked like, and here are the pictures.

Wow. It looks like they might've left the recent extension at the approach end of 28 intact, but dug up the rest of it. I noticed about 4 or 5 planes still tied down on the ramp.

The last single-runway resurfacing project in the area I can remember was over at RYY. At least in that case they let people use the taxiway to take off and land. No such luck here...

Yikes, that's some project. I hope they work quickly!!!

Whats the story here.? It looks like a pretty big operation with various building, hangars etc. Hard to believe they could turn this airport back to dust. :mad2:

Thank god.. It looked like the tree huggers had won another round... You would have thought they could rehab the runway and leave the taxi way intact for operations. then they could kill the taxi way..:D

Actually our city government likes its airport. They spent huge money defending against the NIMBYs when the runway was extended by 1,000'. They have spent millions buying property around the airport for airport development. And now they're completely redoing the old part of the runway and the taxiway. The ramp area will be resurfaced, the fuel farm moved and the beacon moved.

The schedule was to be down for 60 days, but the contractor gets extensions for weather and stuff. It will be longer than that.

My hanger is the small one at the bottom of the pictures, closest to the wing trailing edge. And don't we live in a pretty area!

Hope it goes well Lance. Having a plane at an airport one can't fly out of isn't much fun. 'Course, it doesn't affect your other planes--right?

Best,

Dave

Yes you do.

I noticed south of the lake there are several nice tennis courts, baseball diamonds, etc. Are those owned by the city too?

But the big question is: are they building up the runway elevation? It's all downhill when landing on 28, and I nearly had to apply full power to taxi up to the ramp when I landed there in July. It's quite a gradient!!!

Two things.
Dave, I have relocated my airplane to Athens (KAHN) for the duration. It's a pain because that's over an hour's drive each way. But it's in a hanger (surrounded by nice Learjets) and useable at least.
Rich, yes the baseball diamonds and tennis courts are all part of City Pond Park-owned by the City of Covington. As far as I can tell the elevations will be the same as before the renovations.

They are currently resurfacing the runway at KUKT where Gary Shelby flies out of. It was 3200 x 60 with a parallel taxiway. The orginal plan was to close the western 1/3 and let planes use the eastern 2/3 then close the eastern 1/2 and let pilots use the western 2/3 then close the field for the repaving of the center 1/2. Really a crummy idea the eventually allowed pilots to use the taxiway as a runway but only with prior permission. seems to be working ok and has spared the few businesses on the field from a real drought.

My home airport (KVVS) is closed from 0630-1830 every day, and then only 14-32 are open.

Has been this way a month -- not sure when it will open.

Not many options for someone flying a non-electric taildragger.

:frown3:

Fortunately I found an open transient hangar at KMGW.

about time. that taxiway was MUCH nicer than the runway. Glad they're going to finish it off.
