Plane down near Clow

Crap. That's probably pretty close to Grant and Leslie's house, but they should be at work.

That's a very congested area full of retail shopping centers and homes.

I saw a picture of it on the news and its a Mooney. The plane looked fine, except I think it landed gear up. Doesn't look like anybody got hurt, but I'm not sure about that.

Neither the pilot nor his passenger was seriously hurt. The male pilot and his passenger, thought to be his wife, took off after eating breakfast at the small southwest suburban airport and, shortly after takeoff, the engine on the single-engine aircraft failed, according to Joe DePaulo, the manager at Clow Airport. It landed on Weber Road near Lily Cache Lane.
"It appeared that it tried to turn around and come back to the airport, but it went down in the intersection," said DePaulo, who quickly headed to the scene on news of the situation.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said the plane was registered to an owner in Morris.
DePaulo said the two people were taken to a hospital, but were "walking and talking" after getting out of the damaged plane. The plane did not hit any cars and there were no other injuries.

Phew... Well, all sounds like it ended relatively well. Hopefully the two weren't hurt badly at all.

Yeah, Leslie and I are in Scottsdale right now. In fact, we met up with Greg's wife at O'Hare on our way out here, and I did a BFR with Ben (PHXAvi8tor) yesterday while getting checked out in the T182T here.

Sounds like Joe did a pretty good job with the media. He's a pretty laid-back guy, and a pilot to boot, so that probably helped.

Yes, that's a very congested area, and finding somewhere to put it down without risk is a real challenge. In fact, I used it as an example of just that in a thread here last week with Dan http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showpost.php?p=345893&postcount=35, where I posted links to satellite photos!

Wow - probably a $50,000 hamburger (or breakfast burrito). Ouch. I'm glad they weren't hurt.

It wasn't me (this time). I am checking that the gear is welded down!

The answer is no.

I thought the listing was for a Thomas M. Bell. But it is for a Thomas Bellm. There is a pilot listing for a Thomas Bellm who lives in Morris, IL. The DPE Tom Bell lives in Dekalb and his middle name is George.

GRANT! Get home and defend that airport. As it says in the article they're saying "one of these days a plane is going to hit a house."

You are very lucky the town owns the airport. :D ...or maybe not.

One of these days a house is going to fall on an airplane, let's get together and ban all houses.

This plane's had a hard life!

Got run into some wires and poles on an overshoot in 1967 (damage "substantial"). I tried to link the ntsb.gov report, but the system won't let me since I'm new around here. You can find it by googling N5641Q.

And now fast forward to a new millennium and it gets smacked around again - though it sounds like the plane has only itself to blame this time (assuming good maintenance).

The article says the woman was PRESUMED to be the man's wife. How do you think the story REALLY ended?

The guy who busted the TFR here in Seattle last summer, had a woman with him. They were returning from a weekend at a mountain lake (Chelan). They inerviewed her on national TV. I understand His wife saw the news reports. anyone looking for a float plane? might be a divorce sale here soon! Dave
