When I was there last in 2009 I learned that the airport/airstrip wasn't added until the mid-sixties.

Well, technically, I think we're looking at the original airstrip.
I believe you're correct about the paved GA strip on the west side of the monument. I don't think I have any pictures looking in that direction.
