PIC time in AV-8B Harrier can't be logged as time in an airplane.

Also, it's a 90 gallon tank. I don't know if it's US or imperial. The gauge is in pounds and usually says between 480 and 500 when the tank is full. I would have no doubts if you told me the AV8A had a 60 imp gal tank.

500 lbs is right, the rest is wrong. 500 lbs is 227 KG which is 50 Imperial or about 60 US gallons. The 90 second duration was correct.

Yeah, you're totally right. Sometimes the tactical penguins throw the systems penguins off the iceberg that is my brain. 500 pounds and 90 seconds are the penguins that are allowed to stay.

What's just forward of the windscreen there? Wind direction or AOA sensor?

That's a yaw vane. Indicates relative sideslip. As you're decelerating below a speed at which the vertical stab is effective, but still have considerable forward velocity, building up sideslip can cause an out of control roll in the direction of the yaw. It's the exact same principles at work in a Vmc roll. It has gotten a lot of people, so the idea is to keep the vane centered in VSTOL flight and especially so in a decelerating transition.

Ironically, the Tomcat had a presumably cheaper solution….

…..as does the U-2

...and some flight test Hornets, although I can't seem to dig up a photo.

Wikipedia minutiae has made NATOPS and time in type irrelevant. ;)
