Hi folks

Yes, I do know this isn't much of a comparison but here's the story. I can get a pawnee 260 for a very decent price but I've been after a 600 B model Ag Cat as well. Also not far from the Pawnee's price. Now pros for the Pawnee:

-cheaper to buy
-less parts, less problems(constant speed prop etc)
-less fuel burn. Much less.
-much longer TBO
-better trainer aircraft for young ag pilots
And the list can go on

Pros for the Cat:

-Bigger hopper capacity
-wider swath
-faster
-covers more ground per day
And the list can go on

Those guys who have worked with both, what would you say will be the best aircraft for the job(throwing chemicals @3kg/ha in Africa)?
Although the Cat is a more expensive aircraft to operate, she will do more work and will provide a bigger income whereas the Pawnee is the cheaper aircraft to operate but she will struggle to do the same work as the Cat does on a average day. Which will be the most cost effective for the amount of hectares?

Regards

Never known an ag pilot to downsize unless they were reducing the anticipated acreage for some reason.

Welcome, NovemberCharlie.

There are a lot of ag operators in our vicinity. There are a few Ag Cats, but you rarely see a Pawnee. Most fly Thrushes. You might want to add those to your list.

Are you looking for a good plane to break out a new pilot or a good producer for the cost?

If you're looking to break in a new guy get a Cessna 188, Pawnee or brave.
If you're looking for best production get the cat

You said training, is this going to be more of a trainer or more of a real (as in not just water) spray plane?

Lots of places have good luck using a super cub with a light bar for intro training work.
