I am looking to get a little pocket sized point and shoot camera. I have a nice SLR digital already but just want something small to travel with. Any recommendations from the PoA shooters?

Smaller the better, able to put it in a pocket would be really nice, min 5megapixel resolution. I would love the media to be SD but that is not a deal breaker.

I picked up a FujiFilm FinePix A805 for fifty bucks (after rebate) at RiteAid, of all places. Takes decent enough pictures for ordinary snapshots, and fits in a shirt pocket.

EDIT: Yeah, it uses an SD card.

I've bought 2 of these, for gifts. My daughter has one and I use it, too. It's about ths size of a deck of cards. Works great, uses SD cards, costs about $140 or so new. Uses a rechargable battery instead of AA. It's as close to instant-on as I've ever seen. Turn it on, blink once, and it's ready to shoot. No waiting for it to warm up or load the OS.

Takes great pix - you can set it to auto for point-and-shoot (I call them PHD cameras, "Push Here Dummy"), or configure it to do about whatever you want.

Matt already mentioned it, but here's my testimonial:

Not the most basic or cheapest P&S, but I love my Canon SD1100... SD storage, image size up to 8 MP, 3X optical/4X digital zoom, a real optical viewfinder (I hate using the LCD or an electronic viewfinder), and when it's off or in standby it pulls the lens in and covers it up (which is great with a camera that you're carrying around in a pocket or flight bag). Shoots decent video, too... and has tons of features, including a lot of manual-shooting settings.
Perfect "just in case" camera, and if I haven't destroyed mine yet, it must be one of the more rugged ones. :D

Some samples of stuff I've shot with it:

Canon S90. Fully manual and the same sensor as their new G11. G11 isn't pocketable but the S90 is. It's not much larger than a deck of cards, if even that large.

I like the Nikon CoolPix. I have one I carry with me and one in the lab. Some of the photographs have been used in advertisements. The lab one has no view finder but it works because it is an "indoors" camera. I do like having a view finder in some situations outdoors. It also has a nice panorama setting that helps line up the next shot and keeps the exposure setting between pictures. They are at least 8 Mp now.

Canon S90. Or one of the Nikon Coolpix cameras, depending on your preference.

Nice picture - I wish I had some of the ones my daughter has taken, but they are on her computer. She's a nature photo nut, and that camera does a very, very good job of macro-style close-ups of flowers.

Here's one I took a couple of weeks ago. I just pointed into the eyepiece on my telescope one night to see what would happen...

Obviously fake because there are no stars in the picture :D

Plus it fits in a pocket, which was a main requirement. I love my D80 SLR and the two lenses I have for it. But I don't like carrying it with me all the time.

I agree. My Sony A200 with a pair of lenses is great, but that extra backpack can be a pain on business trips. I've got a 12 Mpixel PaS coming in the mail from Woot. Pentax, IIRC. Paid about $95 with shipping. Will take 720p HD video, as well as stills. Fits in a shirt pocket. SD card for memory (not included, I want to see how large a card it can handle before going to Best Buy to get one). I'll take it to Taipei with me next month and share pictures so you all can see how it does.

When I was in Taiwan last week I took a side trip to Sun Moon Lake, about 2 hours south of Taipei. If you get the chance go! It was really beautiful and nice. I know you can take the HSR to Taichung, and the lake is an hours drive south as I went by bus. But I'll but there is a rail station close by the lake.

Thanks. That's good to know. I'll have a weekend to kill and I've already been to the top of Taipei 101 twice. :D
