What are your thoughts about instrument training Part 141? Outside of the 50hours XC PIC waived what are the benefits? Are students taking the checkride at 40 hours exactly w/ the pathway of 26 hours dual a/c and 14 hours redbird simulator?? What is the average time frame for instrument students to be completed under part 141?

Part 61 instrument thoughts?

I would really love to hear your pros and cons for part 141 instrument training. Thank you and have a blessed day!

I did Part 61 for my private, then 141 for my instrument. I liked 141 because of the structure and plane availability. They also had a good sim that I could use for a fair number of hours to learn procedures. A good Part 61 will offer the same, but when I tried to get my instrument via a 61 school it was more difficult to schedule the instructor and plane consistently and I gave up. I don't recall how many hours I had, but I also was a partner in a plane so I was flying a lot anyway.

Part 141 sucks. Are you good at ILSes but bad at nonprecision approaches? Too bad, today's lesson says you're doing more ILS approaches.

I did Pt 141 because of the structure. I knew what was going to happen on each flight the day before it happened. If one part of a lesson was not satisfactory then the next flight would be to correct the unsat part until the lesson is satisfactory, then on to the next lesson. No skipping around on the instructors whim.

I liked the part where I did not need the same instructor for each flight. Another instructor could step in right where I was in training without missing a step. Which unlike Pt 61 where you may be doing what the instructor wants to do that day.

The flip side of that “what the instructor wants to do that day” can expose you to something he thinks is important that nobody else touches on. That, IMO, is the best reason for multiple instructors.

I went the 141 route for my instrument training. It was a good experience, I especially liked the "stage checks" done by the lead instructor. The lead would sometimes take my regular instructor aside and say "hey, he's doing ok here, needs some work there".

I did my IR 141 due to funding. I liked it but make sure you train regularly or it can bite you.
