So, the park service was concerned about kids falling through thin ice into a 2.5' deep wading pool and getting wet and cold, so they thump a chopper just overhead to chase them off?

Questions are being raised tonight about the actions of a U.S. Park Police pilot who used his helicopter to chase skaters off of a reflecting pool...

The U.S. Park Police confirm it is their pilot at the controls of the helicopter on Feb. 1 – a Friday – as it slowly closes in on the pool from the direction of the Lincoln Memorial toward the eastern end of the reflecting pool.

Park Police have released a statement:

In this incident, several individuals were observed ice skating on the eastern end of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Park regulations prohibit skating on the Reflecting Pool; however, we understand that the means by which the pilot chose to enforce those regulations appears inappropriate. U.S. Park Police officers hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism and strive to ensure that any contact with the public is respectful and appropriate. As such, we have initiated an internal investigation into the actions of our pilot.​

Texting friend who is Park Police. Said they've been doing that for years. He said the brass loves it no matter what they tell the news.

As for the pilot's actions, I didn't see anything dangerous about it, other than the likelihood of blowing debris into someone's eyes.

Looks like an effective method to me.
 
If I were a park manager, I would be more concerned about one of them firing off a slap shot and hitting an innocent person walking by, than the risk of them falling in. But that’s just me.

If I were park police, I might be concerned about one of the kids lofting a puck up at their helicopter...
 
If I were the park police I’d be more responsible with the public’s resources and understand what’s a big deal and what isn’t.
