Our 27th Consecutive Oshkosh -- Anyone else going?

I'm planning to fly in for the first time on Sunday (hopefully early) in a '65 v-tail Bonanza. Any thoughts on North 40 versus Vintage for parking/camping?
 
Vintage is closer to the show and friendlier, in my experience. People there seem to care about their aircraft far more, and there are lots of showplanes. However, as I've said elsewhere on this thread the North 40 is where most of the GA traffic lands and departs. It has its own little airshow after the main airshow every night as scores of aircraft depart and arrive. Also, if you plan to go off site to eat, the restaurants are a great deal closer.

I like the North 40 for some of those very reasons.

Reading this thread makes me even more sad that I'm not going this year.

I would qualify a little on the restaurants being closer. None of them except for maybe 1 or 2 are very close to even the North 40 (partially depends where in North 40 you park) so works best for the most part to have a vehicle to get to the restaurants anyway. Having said that, Greg and I will be with the Cessna 195's in vintage and we do have a vehicle.:smile:

BTW, you can always find your way over to the North 40 in the evening to watch the GA airshow...but you would have to walk back if you stay very late (like to visit with other POAers) as the trams stop running I believe at 8:00 p.m.

Lastly, if you want to have more opportunity to hook up with other vintage aircraft owners for any reason, would be easier to do if parked near them.

Trams are replaced by buses at 8, the buses run until midnight. :yes:

"I reject your reality and insert my own" (Mythbusters)." :smile: :smile: Since people are in almost all, if not all, instances asking Greg if the 195 is HIS airplane and there are very few husband/wife teams that fly and...I very rarely hear other pilots ask Greg if his wife is a pilot and typically ignore me as they talk to him about airplane when I am with him and...I hear a common theme among men that their wives don't fly or don't even want to ride in an airplane with them or camp-out or hang out with other pilots...etc. etc. etc..., I submit to you that the above cannot be correctly ASSumed. :no:

Clarification: I use the term "male" because I have very very little experience with being with Greg when talking to women pilots that we have just met.

Yes, you're penciled in. Unfortunately, I have a conference to attend on Friday, and Leslie is flying out of ORD on Sunday, so she would need to be leaving home with her bags by noon. And, as you know, if you NEED to be there at a particular time, don't go GA:nono:!

Or a really warped sense of humor, in my case. It just reminded me of the bylaws of a non-profit where I used to be on the board of directors. It started as an all-male organization (associated with the Boy Scouts) back in 1938 but when it expanded to include both genders, rather than completely re-write the bylaws, they just added a statement similar to that near the beginning. :yes:

Try being the female when the male doesn't fly... I've thought of getting my boyfriends a Tee shirt that says "She's the pilot, She'ed love to talk about airplanes, I rather talk about football"

Brian (qbynewbie) will be flying here to the farm from New York in his new-to-him 172 that weekend, and he'll be bringing a couple of other forum members with him. Since I couldn't make it to OSH, that will be something for me to look forward to. :yes:

The novelty of summer on the plains has wore off again this year, so we are leaving Friday for a month or so (or however long we decide to stay away) in the mountains. Taking the trailer, so we'll have our bed on our back and staying where it's high and dry. Y'all have fun at OSH.

Hi everybody.. my name is Robert and I happened upon your great website when I was research info about going to Oshkosh this year. I have spent many years over on AOPAs forums and studentpilot.com but I don't think I handed landed here before.

About two weeks ago a pilot friend of mine asked me to go along on his proposed trip to airventure this year when his other partner bailed on him. I thought there was no way in hell the wife was going to let me go while she stayed home with the kids for 5 days but she surprised me and said I could go.

We plan on leaving Denver around 4am on Monday to get in to OSH in plenty of time before the airshow starts and will camp in the North 40. It'll be both of ours first time so we'll be memorizing the NOTAM and I figure it should help having two pilots on board. One flying while the other concentrates on navigation and following the NOTAM.

We are really looking forward to our first trip and we hope we don't have any issues getting in to the North 40 on Monday.

Nice chatting with all of you and safe travels to OSH.

Welcome! When you're at Oshkosh, look for Cessna 195 w/N# 9872A, burgandy over cream color in the vintage section. Maybe we'll be around.

The airspace closes well before the show starts, somewhere around 2:30 in the afternoon. Don't bust your bladder trying to get in Monday, the show will still be there Tuesday. Whatever you do, do not try and land after the airshow is over, unless you enjoy taking your life into your own hands. After the airshow about a thousand planes try and take of and land all at once. It's utter madness, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone sane. Bring a tent that can withstand a thunderstorm, there will probably be one. Welcome to the board and of course see you at the show.

We going to break it up in to 2 stops with 2 hour legs so it should not be too bad and hopefully we'll show up around 1 pm. I think the last leg is only about 1:30 so we'll have lots of fuel in case we need to divert or hold a bit.

Since we are leaving Denver so early hopefully we can miss any thunderstorms unless there is a freek morning one. I'll be my first time flying to that part of the country so I'm really starting to look to see what the weather patterns look like over the next week.

One thing we are looking forward to is the relative low density altitudes. Flying out of Denver we are used to 8-9000' density alts so anytime we get to fly at low alts its fun.

Sorry to disappoint, but pretty much from central Nebraska until you cross over into Wisconsin, there isn't much to see. Pretty much big flat squares of corn or soybeans. ;) :D

Sounds like a fun trip! My wife and I flew from central Iowa to Las Vegas a few years ago - it was interesting to see the change in terrain as we went. Coming from Denver, depending on what you're flying, you could get up high and get some NICE tailwinds. Good luck and take pics!

Depends on your altitude. At 3-4K ft there's plenty to look at, even in flat midwestern states.

Eh.. I guess for a 'newbie' it could be interesting. This is where I've done the vast majority of my flying - central Iowa. Other than watching farmers in the spring and fall or looking for deer in the winter, I'm ho-hum for the view. There are some AMAZING sunsets, though.

We picked up a french press pot just for the trip. It won't be freshly ground :( but we'll do our best to make it palatable (and strong!)
