I noticed that the Colorado contingent seems to get together every once in a while, anything like that in Oregon or the Northwest in general?? (I live on the East side of the Cascades, so I don't have a floatplane endorsement...:D )

I fly rentals out of Creswell (77S) when work and weather permit.

I don't know of any PoA get-togethers as such for this part of the country. Could be we having a bigger contingent of anti-social types. :wink2:

One of my earliest aviation memories revolves around 77S. My uncle flew my brother and I up to the Air Fair from Roseburg in his Tri-Pacer.

If we ever get some sky to fly in around here, we might consider Independence for breakfast, or (later in the spring when they open up the patio BBQ) Sunriver for lunch ...

Not sure I can find Sunriver from Bend, :wink2: But they have good eats. Let's keep this on the burner for when the sky turns blue.

Well if that isn't enough "challenge," distance-wise, how about Gold Beach? :wink2: I've never been there, so is still on my to-do list.

I'm in Montana and make it to eastern WA all the time and occasional trips into OR.

Gold Beach has some great eating spots, we go there from time to time. However if the marine layer is in you have to either shoot the ILS at Coos Bay or Crescent City and cruise along the coast under the clag to get in. (I use Crescent City because the scud run is shorter) They have a nice little strip there.

Where on the east side of the Cascades? I live in Vale, OR.

If everyone made it more than just a lunch, I could buy a commercial airplane ticket to go there. Oregon isn't that far from California.

Weather permitting, I'm making a run to PUW in a couple weeks. I'll be there, fly or drive. Meet up while my wife is in meetings for her sorority?

Summer weather seems to finally be kicking in, so I'm wondering who among the PoA malcontents in Oregon and vicinity are still open to some sort of get together in the next week or three?

(This is also, unfortunately, probably the time when people are out and aboot enjoying that same weather and less likely to find a mutually workable schedule.)

Glad to see there's some PoA folks up there in Oregon. I'll be moving up there (to Bend) in September. I've never been to the Northwest. Can't wait.

Be prepared for a drastic change in the weather, eg. 25% humidity, visibility today is around 100+ miles. Not many bugs either, most can't survive the winters. Added bonus NO CHIGGERS!!! :yesnod:

Being from Mississippi myself chiggers can be especially problematic for MALES. (Ouch) but they're here you just gotta find em, I have gotten chiggers in MT,ID,WA and OR. The last time I got a good case of them, was at Shower Bath Hot Springs in ID (This is fairly deep in the Frank Church Wilderness) They hang out around hot springs. Nobody at work knew what had happened to me.

The other thing, about the northwest, the food sucks. Hope you have an appetites for chicken strips or tofu. :D

Re: NW Cuisine. Maybe you should try someplace other than KFC or Panda Express. :dunno:

Re: Chiggers. Never encountered them here. Noting you are from Montana however, perhaps applying some sheepdip to your little wooly paramour would help the problem go away. :D

I did, that's why I now eat at KFC and Panda Express.

Chiggers will be hanging out around humid places like hot springs, don't let your guard down.

I'm from Memphis (Well MS near Memphis but Memphis is easier to say and i lived in midtown Memphis for 5 years), I live in MT now.

If our mover in question is from Savannah he'll be sorely disappointed with the cuisine here. While I'm sure the 5 star vegan thai fusion restaurant in Portland is wonderful to an Oregonian's pallet a southerner might not know what to do. ( I don't). I actually import some of my food from MS. Taking 15lbs of corn meal through airport security has proven to be a fun experiment.

OTOH, the folks at my work find it amusing that I have about 15 recipes for squirrel.

For those confused by Rusty's culinary tastes, squirrel rolled in cornmeal and deep fried in lard is the pinnacle of Southern culinary achievement. :D If you seek REAL NW cuisine, I offer this as only one of many great places to enjoy excellent meat from real cows, not rats with bushy tails.

If you are ever in Bend, give it a try. (shoes required) :D

We have a tiny fly-in (and I don't know these people so who is to say if none of them show up) scheduled for lunch time on Fourth of July. The pilots in Palo Alto confirmed our breakfast / lunch restaurant, the Two Niner Diner, will be open.

We are thinking something after 11am, at O69 in Petaluma on Wednesday July 4. Right now I believe there are 5 or less pilots.

I will not fly - since that is "my" airport - but I will drive in and meet the pilots. There is nothing "set" except a nice lunch with one another.

I'll be heading up to MMV for the Great Oregon Steamup.

Anyone else going to be there?

My wife's brother loves that sort of thing - but he is in Illinois! I find that stuff somewhat interesting but doubtful I would go just for that - if I do go I'd also visit the Evergreen Museum (again.)

EDIT: Just noticed where they are located - closer to Salem than McMinnville.

Just far enough from me to make for a long day of flying there and back. :(

Not to worry. My friend and I (both from POA) have been wanting to organize a CA fly-in. As I go to more events, join more organizations, and meet more pilots, this will become a reality. My only problem is I live in a studio apartment so I can't "host" the thing at my place. I've seen people on the Red Board try to get pilots in this area together and it often gets moved / changed / canceled / doesn't happen. These things can be tough.

If we (my boyfriend and I) went camping on a weekend for one overnight at either Shelter Cove or Columbia - do they have camping - would any of you be interested?

That is on my "to do list" and I would like to do so within the next month or two. We would bring dog(s).

You mean Shelter Cove California? That would be within my travel range for a late lunch meetup on some weekend.

Cool, and yes that is what I meant. I've been warned though that as a VFR pilot I will be lucky to get in and out of there (fog). We shall see.

What about Columbia?

Fog would be my main concern also. Mild inland temperatures (I think) or an offshore breeze would need to be forecast to make it comfortably probable of landing and leaving. I know fog typically burns off by midday along the coastal areas of California that I'm familiar with. But I have seen a wall of it suddenly move from offshore into the coast like some harbinger of doom in a horror movie.

What about Columbia?
You mean near Columbia Airport (O22)? Unfortunately that would be farther from 77S than even O69.

Here is a list of Montana fly-ins.

I would think Oregon, and Idaho have similar lists.

I plan to fly to KCMA in mid August, and haven't decided how many stops, nor for how long on the way back. Columbia is nice. I spent my teen Summers near there. July and August always seemed to reach 95 to over 100F each day, and blue skies. Thinking about stopping there on the way back.

Are you going to Benchmark this weekend? I might. Intended to go last year but my wife signed me up to dog sit for her co-workers and I couldn't get away.

I would be up for a camping trip. I flew into Eureka for a half marathon a month or so ago and camped out the night before. There is an airport closer to the campground I stayed at (about 2 miles) that is inland more and probably misses most of the fog. It is Roehnerville (FOT). That should be in range of the Oregon crowd and is about 10 or 15 miles from Humboldt and the Avenue of the Giants. Also Garberville is on the other side of Humboldt.

If someone flew into Eureka, they could rent a car (it is about 20 minutes from Roehnerville) and provide some transportation from FOT. There are no car rentals at FOT.

That is certainly a possibility - but I think this is turning into a "West coast" or "California" PoA get-together thread without a thread name change. Perhaps you or Kimerbly can start another thread so more West coasters are likely to read it?

Sunriver or Independence Oregon are somewhat more central locations for the tiny handful of Oregon pilots who are likely to be interested in getting together but still want to minimize Hobbs time costs.

Three different activities to choose from this weekend, One is Benchmark, one is the Plains fly-in, and then there is the Johnson Creek fly-in. Unfortunately, I can't make any of them because I have to attend a wedding in Billings. Stopping into Missoula around 5 today to pick up my Daughter...
