A PA-28-235/236, or a Turbo Arrow? No sweat. Even a properly-flown and properly-functioning PA-28-180 should be able to handle it. I'd probably wait for cooler weather to take a 140 in there.

DA at KTVL was about 8400'. I would not take a 140 up there in those conditions. One person has pretty serious head injuries... probably no shoulder harnesses as they were not standard on the older 140/180s. My 1968 180 has them, but I am not sure if they are original.

Ugh. Mixture would have to be perfectly set and airspeed nailed at Vy to get any climb at all in those conditions.

Ah. My bad. I guess I was assuming he'd departed from TVL. Flightaware track shows he'd gotten up to 9500' enroute.

It’s been very calm here. I flew yesterday morning and there was no wind to speak of at 9am.

Weather models from this morning showed 700MB winds (10K feet) less than 5 knots.

Good thing it was a holiday weekend with lots of boaters around. The high country of the Sierras is a bad place to lose power.

Pre-Flight
Winds were 040 per Pilawt, pushing cooler air from over the lake into their flight path. They made it over the pass but the track shows they really started losing altitude as they got close to / over the lake. I haven’t flown into KBDU in a while but I remember encountering some drafts flying over that relatively small reservoir on approach to 08. Perhaps they encountered something similar?
