The jet was only seconds from touching down at O'Hare International Airport when suddenly the engines roared back to life, the landing gear folded into the belly of the fuselage and the plane climbed into the sky.

The American Eagle plane landed safely 15 minutes later on a different O'Hare runway.

What happened on the first landing attempt?

On his way off the plane, passenger Edward Adams of Chicago stopped a crew member on the jet bridge and popped that question.

It was a close call, he was told, adding that the plane came within 200 feet of colliding with a United Airlines jet.

"The landing was aborted just shortly before the start of the runway," Adams recalled. "The plane appeared to me to be approximately 100 feet above the ground. Passengers shot worried looks at each other."

A terrifying account, indeed, if only it were a near collision. It wasn't. Not even close.

It might be a good idea if the captain made an announcement to ease the nerves of the passengers.

Seriously: Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize, but there was another plane on the runway and we wanted to give them time to turn off and park. It's kind of like when you let the little old lady have the better parking space in the mall parking lot, only in this case, the little old lady was two US Air pilots. ;)

Would have eased the tension right then and there.

"hey tower, n1234 is that a plane on our runway??"

"uhhh yeah looks like it...please go around..."

Happened to me twice so far :)

I hope and I pray that O'Hare controllers did not close that flight plan of the RJ prior to touchdown!! But I think they did and that has been what led to this horrible traagedy today!!!!! WAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!

PUHLEASE!

Why is this even a news story?

Agreed,

A non issue. We've all done go arounds and they are "usually" not scary. I've done many at OHare, and when time allows I announce that the other airline screwed up and we saved the day <g>.......

It isn't news, it's education. The article actually exists mainly to make the point that go-arounds aren't news!

John Hilkevech was on the WGN Midday News. What triggered the column is he got a phone call from a terrified passenger "tipping him" to a near disaster at O'Hare, and he says the "tipping" happens all the time, "I WAS ON A NEAR MISS(sic) AT O'HARE AND YOU DIDN'T WRITE ANYTHING ABOUT IT!!!"

I think the reporter did a good job of explaining how this is a non issue and how it is a practiced manuver. As a new student (8 hours so far) this is one of the first things I was taught about when my CFI had me practicing landings. If I had been on a commercial flight where a go around was preformed, before I started training, I might have gotten a bit nervous as well.
The reporter could have played this up as a near disaster. I applaude him for trying to educate the public instead of sensationalizing the story.

No flight plan? Oh! The Humainity!

I had a go-around on a flight from Denver to SFO on Sunday that made me feel like I was in a GA aircraft.

Fog shrouded the bay, so I'm guessing only one runway was in use. We were on final for one of the Runway 10's (probably Right). All of a sudden the plane makes a solid right turn. I happened to be on the right side window and saw another craft on final (both of us were above the cloud deck). Shortly thereafter, we banked left before straightening out again. Cool, I thought, s-turns on final in the big planes. We were about to enter the soup, flaps were down quite a ways and the captain had told the flight attendants to prep for landing when the engines spooled back up and back on top we went for a go around. Sounds like we just didn't get enough spacing from the plane in front of us, and perhaps the loss of visual contact as the front plane went into the soup was enough to seal the deal on the go around.

S-turns and go arounds in the big iron. Too bad he didn't also slip it in!

I don't think that slips are all that comfortable for passengers towards the back of the plane. I'd expect them to try to minimize them.

I've done them. It both the 737 and the 777. Not a common occurrence but can be useful getting out of a tight spot, so to say.

I sit too far up fornt to feel them in the UAL planes, but I have been at the back of the bus in a BA 747 that was most certainly doing slips into KORD. I knew what was happening, but there were people around me looking very worried at the strange sensation of flying "sideways".

Yeah, I was by no means saying that they aren't done if needed, I just thought you guys avoided doing them. Was I wrong?:D

Try sitting in the next to back row of an Airbus that fishtails the whole way from St. Petersburg to Frankfurt. Darned near made me sick. You'd think they'd yaw dampers in those things. That, or LH would learn how to turn them on. :D

I have noticed that when I have walked to the back on those things. I wonder if it has something to do with the carbon fiber tail?? ;) [ That was just a joke for Greg :D]

Hey, I thought you front-of-the-plane guys weren't allowed to mingle with the back-of-the-plane guys for "security reasons". :D (That always cracks me up when I hear the announcement).

I've been thru many go arounds on airliners. Kind of a non issue. Most,
incidentally were at Ohare, back when I would actually fly thru there.

Only on US carriers. Foreign carriers understand that no one has ever walked to the back of the airplane to hijack it.

I like to walk in the back and see the 'little people' and give them the treat of seeing what a first class passenger looks like!!! ;) ;) :D

I like when they pull the curtain so the mere mortals can't see that the guys in front are getting steaks and wine. I did get to see the TV guy (John Shuck. Remember him?) go to the lav. Nyah, nyah!

John Shuck, sure I know of him. He played the Klingon Ambasador to the Federation in several Star Trek movies!!

He made for a good Klingon. Guy musta been 6' 6."

At the time he was most famous for being Sergeant whoever on "McMillan and Wife."

I was lucky enough to be 'accomodated' on a trascon out of LAX once.

Craig T. Nelson should not eat breakfast burritos as a courtesy to other passengers. Just sayin' . . .:nono:

Even Air France?.... ;) Seriously, I've been on a flight or two on foreign carriers where the crew was not concerned at all about the cockpit door once out over the Atlantic.

One FA has told me that she prefers to work the rear cabin because "on an airliner, the ***hole is always in the front (cabin)". More than one has told me that they don't like to work first and business because passengers up there are arrogant and demanding. I learned quite quickly that I get great service by being nice to the crew....

Nor skyline chili, but that's another matter...

Don't know if anyone here listens to the "Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase" podcast (flight attendant stories), but she says the worst is what she calls "faux first class" -- people in exit rows who have the room of first class but haven't paid the fare. They're the highest maintenance of the bunch.

They're bitter for having been passed over for the upgrade.
