The title was stewardess when the passengers still showed up wearing hats and coats.

Technically, 'steward' refers to the person providing provisions to a passenger, the job of the cabin crew certainly goes beyond that. I am just not sure that 'attendant' was ever much of an improvement, and 'cabin crew' is about as bland as it gets.

I feel OP's pain on this subject. I'm used to language changing, but it's happening faster than I can recalibrate and keep up. At some point I'm going to throw up hands and just call everyone something rude out of Anthony Jeselnik's insult book. :D

When I was a kid in the 90s, History was History and English was English.
 
It boggles the mind to think that there are adults in the day and age that can't quite understand that you might not want to explicitly include gender in a job title.

Really? You can memorize every ****ing color of a flashing light at an airport but can't handle the reclassification of 'Stewardess' to 'Cabin crew'?

They don't change the color of the flashing lights at airports every 15 years or so.

It's a matter of primacy, not disrespect. Once a brain learns a thing one way, it's a fair bit of effort to re-learn it a different way and not use it the old way. Particularly if the change is arbitrary, which your example is not. Brains are frikkin lazy.

I agree, but would add that I think the change from 'flight attendant' to 'cabin crew' is arbitrary and not one I'm going to make much effort to remember.
 
Fifteen years ago was 2006. No one was using the word "stewardess" then.

They were called flight attendants when I was a kid in the 80s. That was 40 years ago. It doesn't take 40 years to learn a word.
 
Boobies (harkening WAY back to 2016 or so). Just did a POA search for this word and got over 10 pages of hits. It sounds more offensive today than it did 5 years ago...

It’s sex - what you were born as, biologically- not gender. And it’s a real thing and many many many cultures over the centuries has specifically had sex-based language. The feigned offenses of people that want to celebrate their achievements on the basis of sex, but then want equality are hypocritical and arbitrary.

I don’t get tired of people making accurate observations about my brown hair and lighter skin and making an accurate description of me. If steward, or stewardess offends you, there’s honestly something wrong with you just as much as if you think it’s wrong to say boy or a girl about specific kids on the playground.
 
My brother in law works for Microsoft. They are now required to put preferred pronouns in their e-mail signatures, voicemail greetings and when they introduce themselves in Team (Zoom) meetings. So like “he/him”, “she/her” or any of the 3rd person variations. What happened to just using names? Is it really that hard?
