So, I was looking for a plane last year, but nothing really struck my fancy, and I put the search on hold indefinitely...but to back track a couple years, when I was still flying 12R and the esteemed Mr Cutler was clubbing it, I harassed him mercilessly on buying a plane, and would send him links to all sorts of ones he should buy. And so he did...and paybacks are hell.

I was sitting around fat dumb and happy no worrying about buying anything, and then a Luscombe was available for cheap, but not really the type of plane I am looking for, and I didn't worry about looking so much. Every once in a while I'd go on globalplanesearch, but that was more out of boredom than really looking for anything.

Then a couple weeks ago, that rat bastard Spike sends me a link on ebay to a Twinkie, and so I went and checked out the seller's site and decided...ummmmmm.....no. But there was a 1980 Senecal listed for sale, and a 1979 Seneca as well. But those were out of my price range, so I kept scrolling down, and saw a cream with tan and brown accented plane. Meh, the colors dont really do it for me, but it said make offer, and I scrolled through the pictures and saw this:
Well then, I guess I need to look closer at this. So in a whirlwind (and hopefully not financially hasty decision) process, I bought a Sierra, I mean a 727...

I mean,

727DeltaSierra

So, I am now the owner of another money pit.

I kept it quiet because I had no clue how it was going to turn out in person. There are some minor flaws as there would be with any aircraft 51 years old, but it seems to be well maintaned, the logs go all the way back to delivery, nothing really seemed amiss, so I inspected it, test flew it, and got handed the keys today, after I handed over a check.

A select few knew, not because of favoritism, or them being better friends, but because I either had breakfast with them (Dr Bruce) had WingsFlyBQ coordination to work out (Ted, Adam) had a legal question (Mike) needed a Florida CFI for a insurance checkout (Ken) or they were the dilweed that started the whole thing. Deadman Spike. Anyone else who claimed to know, was full of it. But props to Jesse for nailing it early on.

Congratulations. Nice looking bird.

Just another way to throw money into the air.

I gotta either start flying the Commander again or put it on the market.

I looked through all your old posts. You talked about getting one several times..and it was one of your 2008 goals.

Yeah, now I just gotta get it home. Monday doesn't look promising right now. At least that stationary front is starting to move, maybe I can find a hole to punch through.

Glad you found something you like Ed. Looks like there's room to add new toys too!

Welcome back into the ship of fools club......
Now, if someone would just send Hayden to ride home with him.

That's a nice looking plane. I've always liked Commanches. congrats Ed

Nice. Very nice...

An air gizmos dock with a 496 would look good right there next to the 430.

Jeez, I dont even have it hope and you guys already want me to start adding to the panel

Congratulations! I must admit I thought the guessing game was very enjoyable. I expect to be notified on your arrival so I can bring my drooling towel post haste ;)

Congratulations!
Now, go be bad and have fun...

Now Missa knows that I lied to her when she asked me if it had anything to do with an airplane and I said no. :D

Congrats, Ed, and welcome back to the money pit club. She looks like a nice bird, I look forward to seeing her in person.

Nice, Ed. On your way home just come up the coast and use my hangar again for a few nights.

WTG Ed! PA24-250... GREAT choice. It's an early one too, and someone changed the tail number somewhere along the way.

Now, I'd like to be the first to ask... Can I have a ride? Actually what I'd really like to do is to go on a long cross country with you so I can make sure it's comfy before I go and drop a bunch of money on one with two fans.

Wait you said you told me that you filled us in because we were better friends than the others

How much extra pork do I have to put on your plate? I can put up to 8 pounds at a time . . . :blowingkisses:

Cheers,

Nice looking bird, Ed.

Now we know who will get the joy of taking Red Coat Lady on her 'first' airplane ride...again. :D

Hey, I'm glad I'm not one of your better friends. :D

Seriously, congrats! I love Comanches. Built where they should be built in Lock Haven. Now bring it to Wings!

Why do you think I made the post that I wasnt driving to wings? :D

Oh, and I never lied in the die spike die thread. I did get a 727...sort of. :D

prettty. how much were the sennies? if had money, i would buy a seneca II and put a lot of love and affection into her. really, that's the perfect bird for a 100 hour a year pilot who wants a twin.

Good job, man - that plane looks sweet!

ok, Ed - no reason you can't make RDU on the 23rd!

Memorial Day Weekend. Standing plans for the past 10 years.

Nuh-uh. That's the perfect bird for a 100 hour a year pilot *with a cello* who wants a twin. ;) Without the cello, I think a Twinkie beats a Seneca, but that's just MHO.

Believe it or not the insurance on a twinkie is probably higher than on a seneca. Enough to wipe out any savings you would save on fuel for the first 2 years. If you are a "beginner" twin pilot.

Haha, the cello does take some space!

Really? Wow. I didn't get any insurance quotes on a Seneca, 'cuz I think the fuel burn of anything other than the Twinkie is more than I want to be paying for. I'm a fan of efficiency.

Well ,when he get's it home looks like this ol" cherokee driver may be getting checked out for high performance/complex.
And if the "warden" er I mean the wife likes it :blowingkisses:I may have to start looking for a Commanche uh 260 or 400. How much faster are they than a 250?
Or maybe I'll just go look at that Luscombe that I told Ed about.

Mmmmm.... a Comanche 400...

....Mmmmm!

That depends on your mission. If all you want is a twin, I tend to be a fan of the Twin Comanches, but the Seneca/Seminole/Dutchess will also do.

I bought my Aztec because I like flying something with the useful load of a truck and still have respectable single engine performance at gross. Even though I'm only expecting to do about 100-200 hours per year in it, since a good number of my big trips are stuffing the thing to gross (at least, that's what I've seen so far), that's been good for me. I wouldn't want to lose the left engine on a hot day at gross, but that's just a good general rule. Plus, I got an awesome deal on the Aztec.

Comes down to figuring out what the best bird for your total mission is. :)
