Oh, the cost of aviation....

You mean the renter actually got to get into the plane for less than an hours' rental time?

I spent 1:15 getting an "orientation briefing" for a DA-20 after having flown over 40 hours in them - and at the time it had been less than 90 days since the last go.

Needless to say, I think someone though they had a good revenue stream. I was forced to dam it up and go fly a 172 again.

Unbelievable. Some flight schools are just looking to go out of business. I understand that this is expensive, but that doesn't mean we need schools trying to screw us.

New FBO you were dealing with?

I understand a checkout, but not a "Hey, you haven't rented from us for a while, so we're going to make you pay for some dual time."

The FBO at the feild closest to home makes you fly one of there planes in the last 90 Days or you have to do a check out... I could have just flown the Berz Archer the day before and I would have to check out for thier 180... unless I had flown one of their 152's...

I like to keep current over there so I go bump around the pattern once every 90 days but their planes are so junkie on the interior I would rather drive 1hr 15 min then take their planes on a xc.

Missa

It's not uncommon with FBOs to require that dual or to simply fly yourself every 60 days. Insurance companies' odds makers have found ~60 days with no flying to be a significant turning point for perishable piloting skills v. $ lost in claims, especially for PIC in HP/Complex models or for IFR.

New FBO, but with recent time in log book and a phone number to verify, I expected a check ride, emergency quiz and procedure orientation, not a complete Q&A seesion about every little doodad and subtle nuance of flying the mighty DA20-C1. An hour would have covered it in the real world. And the guy was not even cheap about it. High (for area) rate and a VERY detail oriented and focused chap.

Quite frankly, the 430 is a nice piece of equipment, but for day VFR in a local area with a lot of landmarks, GPS is low on my list. I am good at comms, and understand how to work the radio. I used to use HF Global net almost daily for 15 years, and got a crash course in it's use. Radio is no mystery, GPS is no mystery, and besides, the important thing is to FLY THE AIRPLANE. We never even got there.

And actually, if I have not rented (or more importantly flown) for a while, I don't object to having a CFI ride shotgun for a while, just in case I got really stupid....
