O-200 Sudden Roughness in Flight

It does have a filter.

The mechanic didn't mention anything about a tear down. He only said that the filter "did its job." I will be sure to inquire further. I have't used this shop before but the mechanic seems to be well regarded and was recommended to
me by several people when I first bought my plane so I think I am in good hands.

When you find metal in the filter, it's in the sump too. get it out.

I talked to the mechanic again tonight and also consulted independently with my regular mechanic. As they explained it to me, the damage/failure was at the top of the piston in the combustion chamber and neither thought there was a risk of metal in the sump. I will confirm my understanding when I see the cylinder on Wednesday, but I think they found the rings were intact when they pulled the cylinder. Something on the top broke and wound up in the exhaust.

Recommendation is to replace with reman cylinder since I am at TBO.

Flush that sump, simply as a double check on where the debris went.

I think they found the rings were intact when they pulled the cylinder. Something on the top broke and wound up in the exhaust.

Sounds to me as if you had a piston failure. this is typical at TBO in the 0-200 when they make it that far.

This engine is trying to tell you some thing.

Yep, plane is back with a reman cylinder.

Exhaust valve broke at the stem and the piston pounded the valve around in the top of the cylinder before spitting it out into the muffler. Rings were intact, all valve pieces were accounted for, and the sump and oil filter were clean.

That is exactly what happened to my friend!
