While looking up potential planes I ran into this for only $4.6 million. Sadly I'm too poor for a warbird and the cockpit looks a bit tight.

So now the stupid question.
Is flying a warbird that's still in active use by other countries asking to be intercepted?
Are certain paint schemes forbidden? For instance if a Zero in imperial paint flew by I'd simply smile. If a 29 in Soviet paint flew by I'd wonder if Red Dawn is happening IRL.

At the speed it goes, just imagine making a small navigation mistake, entering the ADIZ over Washington DC with that thing.....
 
Once I fulfill my indentured contract with uncle sugar, I'd like to travel to Eastern Europe and log some time in a Su-27. That's the one bucket list item I'd splurge some stupid one time money on. Right now is probably not the right time for that kind of tourism for me lol.

I never looked seriously into it, but for the double digit USD cost they were asking, no way I'd agree to it unless it stipulated sole manipulator time. I already fly pointy nose for a living, sitting in a fighter is nothing novel for me. I'm looking for something more involved, within the bounds of what team DoD would allow me of course lol.
 
So you buy it. How do you get checked out in it??
 
Just a guess, but I’d guess that if you can afford to buy and fly it, such details kind of just fall into place.

You have to secure an FAA sanctioned training program and get a type-specific LOA to operate in the NAS. Usually the firm you're contracting through (everybody uses handlers at that level of acquisition) might have lead-in trainers like L-29/39 where you get the first portion of training in, then topoff in the actual aircraft if it's tandem. Then the FAA issues the LOA. Insurance is probably gonna be liability only. At least that's the typical progression in things like a dual seat Mig-21, and the Mig teen series.

From my understanding, most of these soviet era samples are owned by leasing companies, but there are some bona fide private owners in the US. Unless these things are associated with the dog and pony show circuit, they're not flying much more than 30 hours a year. In fairness, I've had years where I didn't fly the slowrrow much more than that either, so that's fair as far as private ownership goes.

Next best thing would be to seek employment with the Draken et al of the world, and get some of that sweet Mirage F1 time (without having to merc' it in Libya like that usaf mechanic whackadoodle did a few years back).

I forget how long it's been, probably close to 20 years, but my wife OK'ed a trip for me to Russia to fly the Sukhoi. I think the cost was $12,000 plus airfare.

I decided it wasn't worth the juice.

Probably a few hundred former military jets flying in the US with tactical paint schemes. Same think with former military helos. No restriction that I know if other than making sure the N number goes with it.

I kinda wonder if any of the defensive systems are still operational? Maybe an RWR, flares, or maybe add rocket pods with fireworks.
 
Personally, I'd take a F-86 over any of the Russian stuff as an owner.

Assuming you’re not already type rated, where do you have to go to get trained, Russia? They might be able to give you some real world experience in the very near future if you want.

While I’m sure companies like Draken or ATAC get waivers from the ATF, I doubt a privately civilian owned aircraft gets to keep those things. In the US, RWR software, jam code settings (ALQ-144) and flare settings are all classified information. Restricted equipment as well. We didn’t even put that stuff on the aircraft we sold to the Afghans. I’m sure whoever owned this MIG-29 probably stripped it pretty well before selling it.

About 20-25 years ago, my airport collected a batch of AN-2s and Kamov helicopters. Yuri was in charge, and he got a couple of the AN-2s flying.

Eventually, the planes were abandoned there. The rumor at the airport was that this was an immigration scan; Yuri would claim he needed a particular type of specialist for the Antonovs or Kamovs, and the only place he could find them was Russia.....

The rumor was this was something he and a few buddies cooked up, not an attempt to slip dozens of folks into the US....

I flew in one in Bulgaria. Yeah.... I can say I have some time in the MiG but other than it's small with big motors and no gas it was not that great. Plus I can't imagine having to punch with that garbage seat (that I barely fit in) and harness (same). That was a 1-time event for me. I missed out on a Flanker ride when they were at Mtn Home. That would've been baller.

Yep. Today we have the big consulting companies bringing in people on visas, because of course we can't find programming talent here. The reality? They work way less, and if they reveal that their employers are doing something "not quite right", they don't get fired, they get deported. Why we permit this is beyond me.

Impressive how they throw these decrepit relics around these airfields. IMHO it's a testament to the brute force engineering employed in the Soviet years
