Any thoughts on this change of wording? Grammatically I don’t think it is correct. An air mission seems to be a conceptual thing like a process rather than a concrete, animate object. I’m not sure you can notify a process. You could notify the people performing the process, such as airmen, airwomen, airpersons, whatever.

I saw this in the news a few weeks back.... I laughed out loud in disgust. It seems stupid to me....
and yes, I agree. I'm no English major, but it sounds very improper to my ear too.

At least it's really a nothing burger since in common plain language its pronounced Notam so nothing really changes.

What bugs me more than anything about it is with all the things that need attention, THAT seems pretty low on the list. And I'd argue pretty much that it's a solution in search of a problem.
Actually that would be an interesting survey....

Have you ever in your flying career been bothered by the term Notice to Airmen?

Political correctness is in. Since good grammar is racist, it is out.

ignore it and hopefully it'll go away

Notice to airMammals. That woulda worked. Also covers the future case where non-humans mammals take to the skies...

NEVER! Why should it bother me? I never even thought about it until this PC lunacy.

I am offended at the suggestion that I am such a snowflake I can’t handle being called an airman.

I don't know. On another forum I frequent there was one female pilot extoling the virtues of this change, and how it would make up for all of the misogyny she has endured as a female pilot during her career. She was quite serious and defensive about this subject.

But I will leave it at that, before this gets locked down.

Same thing with getting rid of “cockpit” (which was a gender neutral term and a holdover from the age of sail)

The FAA will do anything to appear woke other than what it actually needs to do; tackle mental health reform.

Makes sense..."men" in AirMEN do not listen to instructions even when provided but every man always wanted to be part of a "mission" since childhood...

If they were smart they would figure out how to weave a beer and steak into the name as well.

Philosophy at my last job seemed to be, “as long as you’re the one that’s offended, it’s all good.”

NO, "airmen" in general never bothered me. I liked being one of the guys. Now that I've gotten into sailing, I'm annoyed that the "man overboard" drill had turned into a "crew overboard" drill. When I told them I preferred "man overboard", they told me I needed to think about the younger generation of women. However, I notice that even those who advocated it in order to be more inclusive still yell "man overboard!" [/rant over]

Yes.
It doesn't crack the top ten on the Botherness Scale, but it's there.

I'm one of those that advocates for modernizing language when able. In a field full of difficult diversity challenges, language is low-hanging fruit.

"Notice to Aviators" would have been a much better solution; then you could've at least called it a "NOTA" and the transition wouldn't be too bad.

When we race offshore, we’re equipped with a few extra safety devices, including a “Man Overboard Module” aptly known as MOM.

I don't care a lot. I think it's a bit silly but whatever.

My local tower was having fun with it when they cut the atis Saturday... putting heavy emphasis on the word "missions".

Would you also agree, though, that "mankind" was never supposed to mean that it didn't include men and women? I think this is a generation of snowflakes who are so shallow, they miss deeper meanings.

Good news is, since it’s now a “mission”, nothing else matters…ya gotta go!

What does the FAA have to do with mental health? Are there an inordinate number of unbalanced people flying they aren't addressing?

I think it's more likely that they are trying to comply with some law or another.

A (female) pilot/coworker and I were discussing this a few days ago.

She thought it was stupid. She did say that there were some things in her experience that crossed the line, but this wasn't even remotely one of them. One example she gave from her Air Force days was some kind of checklist acronym somebody came up with that spelled SLUT. She said that was pretty far across the line for her.

I, being a white male, firmly believe that it is not possible for me to judge whether or not somebody should or shouldn't be offended by something like this. A "I haven't walked a mile in their shoes" kind of philosophy.

I read "air mission" as a reference to a flying church. I find that offensive. Well, not really, but I feel like I should, so that's close enough. I might be offended in the future, perhaps, by the suggestion.

So I think instead they should say "notice to air movement". Which has the added bonus of including the younger generation, who might wish to distance themselves against somehow being in control over flight. This way they can fly more as passive observers of the flight experience. "The airplane just flew that way!" could become a catch phrase.

But, as is obvious from this thread, all women don't view things in the same way. Just as all white men don't.

Much of what the FAA does is not related to aviation

I can assure you that no one in FAA flight standards was conferred prior to the change.

if it were up to me and I was forced to make a change, a "NOTAM" would become a "notam"...a word that is no longer an abbreviation of anything, just a word. Why does it have to stand for anything? It would fall in the same category as "radar" or "laser", words whose etymology traces back to a abbreviation but is now its own word.

Oh oh , what if one is a different color ?

Absolutely ridiculous.

If the goal was to make it gender neutral, all they had to do was change it to Notice to Aviators.

The maritime equivalent of NOTAMs has always been Notice to Mariners.

It’s just not that hard.

That would exclude aviatrices.
