So, I have a trade show literally across the street from O'Hare. Tuesday morning arrival, Wednesday noonish departure.

What's the chances of being able to fly in there in a piston single? VFR? IFR?

@Radar Contact , should I just drive around the lake as this is not going to happen?

Signature says their fees are are $54 (not including parking or Chicago fees) so not horrible.

Edit: Signature fees, not so bad. City of Chicago fees, bring lube.

Easy.
I saw an Archer there a while ago.
It'll be around $100 all in for the overnight.

You can do it; there is a big lull in arrival traffic at around 9-9:30am and that’s probably the easiest time to come in. If that time doesn’t work, we’ll get you in whenever you show up, but there might be some extra vectors to get you into the right spot.

Slot reservation required?
Only if there is a ground delay program. If the weather is fine you should be able to get in IFR or VFR without one. I personally would file Halie direct and come in IFR from the southeast. Or if you really prefer to cut across, Fiyer direct. I’d file for 8000 and see what the center throws your way. That would put you above the MDW arrivals and below the ORD jets. Expect 27R or 9L but be ready for any of them. VFR departures are usually easiest but either should work fine.

I'd be direct from just about VIO. So somewhere in from the NE. Figured I'd get 27L or 22R considering where the GA ramp is if the winds are westish.

I see where FIYER is, yeah, if I file I'll do that. Thanks!

Looks like east winds tomorrow. From the NE you will almost certainly get 9L which is probably the easiest taxi to Signature. IFR you’ll be at 7000’ until you’re west of PWK, VFR you’ll either get routed under the B under the departures until you’re west of ORD, then brought in just NW of O’Hare, or if you come in high enough, they’ll just put you into the IFR arrival flow, depending on who is working.

I have an annual trade show across the street from ORD. The last time I looked there we’re landing and ramp fees, tsa fees per person, etc. over $100 in fees. For me, it was easy enough to land at schamburg or DuPage and just rent a car. Maybe I’ll reassess after others weigh in

Rental car makes it just cheaper for me to drive from Michigan. Maybe not cheaper, just easier

Seems to be variable fees, maybe based on time. Looks like it could be up to $200 landing and $50/night. Would be worth a phone call if for no other reason than to avoid a surprise.

This could an epic POA event. Ed’s flying in and starts a pizzn’ match with either @Radar Contact or @Jmcmanna who goes into an ATC memes worthy rant. The other one steps in, takes over and calms things down. By this time @EdFred is having some problem with his plane. All we need now is a POA CFI standing by to swoop in and talk Ed down

That's why he needs a video camera there.

Not going till next week. Will see what the weather brings. I'll be sure to throw a "Raahjaahhhhhh" in there

Before you go, please read the NOTAMs. I can bet you a large sum of money you won't get 22R.

As a general KORD tip, when you're talking on the ground, just do what they tell you to do. Don't worry too much about readbacks etc. They honestly don't care if you know what you are doing. Just acknowledge the gist of what they tell you and read back runway crossings.
Unless you are unsure, then obviously ask. But the biggest mistake you can do in ORD is to stop. You NEVER stop at ORD. You can go around the A or B loop 5 times and no-one cares, as long as you don't stop.

For example, if you get 27R. You want to land long and vacate at C1. They will likely tell you "GA ramp via left on C through the pad D TT cross 22R". Just read back "GA ramp cross 22R". There's only one reasonable way to go there, don't block the frequency with the full readback.

KORD ground is BUSY. It's common for arrivals to taxi all the way to the first runway crossing point without talking to anyone. And even more common to just keep going and never talk to ground.

Just as an idea how it works. A while ago we landed on 10C, got the usual "double left on Papa hold short CC monitor tower 123.45". Tower cleared us to cross, never had a chance to read it back. switch to ground on K, go the long way round (K, A9, A, G, G2, A), do a double left on B and go to B pad, and that's when ground had a chance to talk to us, "Your gate wasn't open eh? thanks".

Sigh. Land at PWK take River rd to Rosemont. 20 mins. You can’t get out from ORD in 20 mins.....now rush hour......that’s a different scene....

I’d be going to PWK too, or somewhere similar. Unless you need the ‘street cred’ or it’s 2:00 A.M., I wouldn’t fly into ORD.

I’m not saying it can’t be done though.

No one is gonna ask what trade show? So many choices...

The whole reason for flying into ORD was location, location, location. Get the FBO to drop us off at the convention center, (or the hotel shuttle we are staying at across the street get us) and pick us up (/drop us off) the next day. No Uber (which I don't have on my phone), no rental cars, no taxis. If I start throwing in rental cars and flying into another airport, I may as well just drive.

Fly it.

Do it, set a video camera up so we can see it.
How f'ing boring is that? 7500' x 150' (Assuming 27R or 9L as was suggested Ed should expect).

Ed's not one to go there 'cause he thinks it's cool to mix it up with "the big iron" and play pretend. He's going there 'cause he needs to.

Show me a vid of somebody stuffing a 180 into 1,000' runway or onto a gravel bar. Whooohooo! That's flying and using skill...not playing wannabe...

What if I request to land on taxi way PP1? That's only 1300' :D

Different strokes, Tim. I think I know what your favorite stroke is. LOL

Don't be a wimp it ain't nuthin' if you don't try going in nordo or at bare minimum get close and then declare an emergency on a handheld What could possibly go wrong? The video could go viral on the Utubes and you could be rich...RICH I TELL YA!

Hot dog.

28L/10R would be a fun taxi :)
They don't land on 28L. 10R is used when in an east configuration with high demand. They will land 9L, 10C, and 10R while departing 9R and 10L.

Landing 10R you'd exit left then contact South Ground. South ground will take you up then west on P, instruct you to hold short of CC, and have you monitor the Tower frequency for those landing on 10C. Once there won't be any conflicts with 10C landings clearing the runway, you'll be told to monitor the Tower freq for traffic departing 10L. He'll clear you to cross 10L on CC, turn right on K, then contact Inbound Ground.

It's pretty easy when you already know which frequency to put in the standby next.

Yeah I've done that multiple times. It would be a fun taxi going to the FBO though. It's easily 30 minutes just to the L gates if they send you the long way round.
I love flying in/out of ORD. As long as you know what you're doing (and you don't stop), it goes really smooth.

Oops, I had the wrong Tuesday...we will see what next Tuesday brings. @radarcontact and I are both scheduled to work next Tuesday morning, so at a minimum someone in the TRACON will be cheering you on.
